Dr. Owen O’Neill came highly recommended and now I know why! On December 1, 2023 I went in to surgery with a very messed-up knee. I had huge bone spurs that started to limit my very active life at 69 years old. Surgery went very smoothly. Dr. O’Neill and his team were very attentive, caring and competent. The pain was manageable. I rented the ‘NICE’ cooling system, did my PT, and only needed the walker for one week. Then I used a cane for another week. I kept up with my exercises well and ‘graduated’ the program. I now have over 130 degree bend, which will just keep improving. I can do 6 flights of stairs without a problem. I swim, take nice long walks, and am just enjoying an active life again! I obviously I needed to do my part too, but clearly Dr. O’Neill is a very big part of this success. I am most grateful to him, as are my husband and family!

I had the privilege of being under the care of Dr. Owen O’Neill during my hip replacement journey, and I cannot express my gratitude enough. Dr. O’Neill embodies the perfect blend of professionalism, compassion, and expertise. Dr. O’Neill’s warm and friendly demeanor immediately put me at ease. He took the time to listen to my concerns, patiently answering all of my questions. It felt like I was discussing my health with a trusted friend rather than a surgeon.

Dr. O’Neill’s meticulous approach impressed me. He explained every step of the procedure, ensuring I understood what to expect. His attention to detail instilled confidence in me, knowing that I was in capable hands. The entire team, led by Dr. O’Neill, contributed to my positive experience. Isabel, Ann and Casey were exceptional. Their kindness, empathy, and professionalism made a significant impact on my journey.

Dr. Owen O’Neill is an amazing orthopedic surgeon. My hip replacement was a success, and I owe it to his expertise and the wonderful team he leads. Thank you, Dr. O’Neill, for giving me a new lease on life! If you’re considering hip replacement surgery, I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. O’Neill and his team at Twin Cities Orthopedics. They truly go above and beyond to ensure their patients’ well-being.

I am just 3-months out from my second Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery with Dr. Owen O’Neill and his team. This surgery was as successful as my first TKR two years ago with Dr. O’Neill and his team. I again can attest that everything about Dr. Owen O’Neill, his team, TCO and the EXCEL Program were top notch. From pre-surgical prep, through surgery, post-op, PT-rehab, and personal training sessions I remain extremely impressed with TCO.

After my surgery it was critical to go through 6-weeks of great TCO physical therapy sessions and then four TCO personal training sessions over the next month to focus on sports specific training for agility, strength and speed in my racquetball sport. Within 2+ months after surgery I started getting back to a competitive level on the r-ball court as an “A-level” player. And I am getting stronger each week due to the proper surgery skills and technology, coupled with the effective post-op rehab and training. I am very grateful for an excellent surgical experience, outcome and results in getting back to the quality of physical life I desired.

I will continue strongly recommending Dr. O’Neill to my friends and fellow athletes. If you want peace of mind for your orthopedic medical matters then Dr. O’Neill and TCO are your clear choice.

Everyone’s journey to total hip replacement surgery is unique but has a common element, which is the pain. For my left hip, the deciding moment was when an easy family hike in late fall 2020 became almost impossible for me to finish. I was astonished that the occasional twinge of pain was suddenly so intense, I had to come to a complete stop and call out to family for help. That’s when I knew. The choice of surgeons was easy. My RN husband has a positive medical relationship with Dr. Owen O’Neill, since he operated on my husband’s knee many years ago. I liked Dr. O’Neill immediately. He vibrates with warm confidence. He is direct into honest. He lets you know what he expects from you and what you can expect from him.

I was worried about recovery. I thought it would be long and painful, although Dr. O’Neill said I would be back to work in 10 days and driving in 7 days. His prediction was entirely accurate. Dr. O’Neill was honest about the future of my right hip. He told me I would “know” when it was time, but that future surgery was inevitable. He was right. A Halloween event in October of 2023 was the moment of truth. I was looking forward to my second surgery, which happened on December 1, 2023. I was home on December 2nd.

With Dr. O’Neill’s minimally invasive direct anterior technique I had just modest discomfort and I appreciated the great care I received at the Two Twelve Surgery Center in Chaska. The new facility is amazing. It’s spacious, safe, and there are plenty of hallways for walking. Also, the BLT I ordered for my first meal was delicious. You are so well treated that you want to stay longer but Dr. O’Neill believes that the quicker you are home, the quicker you can recover.

You need to start doing things for yourself ASAP. That is the mantra from TCO. Walking is your physical therapy. Believe it and believe in TCO.

I have had excellent results from the surgeries performed by Dr. Owen O’Neill. He is extremely experienced and has a great bedside manner. His PA-C, Isabel Campos, and his coordinator, Ann Thompson, were very professional and helpful. I am getting back to the high intensity (strength and cardio) workouts that I need to maintain muscle and elevate my mood. I would recommend Dr. O’Neill to anyone with issues in their knees or hips, whether surgical or non-surgical.

Dr. O’Neill performed my hip replacement in late September of 2023, and I am thrilled with the results. I have resumed my workouts, including weight training and elliptical work. I have been able to swim, snorkel, hike and scramble without worrying about hip pain or dysfunction. The pain was minimal, and within 3 days I was walking without any assistive devices, doing stairs and everything I needed to do for self-care. I returned to a physical job within 2 weeks of my procedure, and haven’t had any issues with performing at a level that is better than I could before the procedure. His entire team has been proactive, responsive to questions and communication, and timely with all appointments. I should have done this sooner, and I will recommend Dr. O’Neill to anyone who needs hip surgery!

Dr. O’Neill and his team is simply the best. From the first appointment all the way through surgery and follow up, everyone was professional and took their time to answer any questions about the procedure and PT program. Dr. O’Neill did a wonderful job and I am pain free and back to my normal activities. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and his team if you are looking for a first class orthopedic surgeon and support team. I couldn’t be more pleased with the whole experience.

I had a minimally invasive anterior approach hip replacement in September 2023. Prior to surgery, I wasn’t able to golf, garden or even walk average distances due to bone pain and the lack of range of motion. After surgery, I didn’t have any bone pain. I regained complete mobility and activity. At 2.5 weeks post-surgery, I no longer needed a walker or cane. I resumed my 2-3 miles walks. I followed Dr. O’Neill’s post-op recovery guidelines and got clearance to resume sport activities after my follow-up visit with him.

His staff was top notch. They were very accessible when I had questions and didn’t rush when assisting me. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and his staff should a hip replacement be needed.

I wanted to share my experience for anyone who might be apprehensive or concerned about their surgery.  I was at TCO Eagan on August 7, 2023. My experience from start to finish was incredibly positive. Dr. O’Neill and his entire team, Isabel, Ann and the TCO team went above and beyond my expectations. I did a ton of research on the surgery I wanted and Dr. O’Neill was with me step by step. The preparation well in advance of surgery, information throughout the process, the thoughtfulness and support from the team the entire time was phenomenal. My left hip was bone on bone and I could barely walk to the mailbox. Today, I feel as if my hip is brand new. I am back in the game and my quality of life is amazing. Thank you really isn’t enough to say how grateful I am to Dr. O’Neill and the entire team.

I had a hip replacement on June 20th with Dr. Owen O’Neill in Edina. I choose him because I had had a consultation with another physician and felt unsure about the whole process. When I met with Dr. O’Neill, he took the time to listen to me, explained the procedure thoroughly, and addressed other issues to help me recover better. I left my consultation motivated to get healthier and stronger. My surgery went great, recovery was really good, and I was back at work doing hair a month later! I had the most positive experience and would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill!

I have suffered from hip discomfort for years. At only 45 years of age, I could barely walk and I was in so much discomfort. I saw a few surgeons but it was Dr. O’Neill that had the knowledge and experience which made me choose him to perform my surgery. His demeanor is calm and kind, and his team was also amazing in making me feel so comfortable. I am very thankful for the talent he has and that I am able to enjoy daily activities again. Thank you to Dr. O’Neill and his team!

I have been struggling with hip pain for over a decade. I saw a provider who told me I was too young for a hip replacement and recommended physical therapy instead. That didn’t work, and actually made the pain worse since I had dysplasia and a bone spur that was contributing to the pain. Six years later (at age 44) I was limping around my friend’s cabin and we started talking about what I could do to fix the problem. It turns out another friend’s husband recently had his hip replaced and was very happy with the results. His surgeon was Dr. Owen O’Neill, so I asked my primary for a referral. As soon as Dr. O’Neill saw my X-ray, he said “I can fix that”. I was so relieved to hear him say that a hip replacement did not have to wait until I was 50 as I was so tired of being in massive pain almost every day. Three months later I had the surgery done and I have not had any pain since. It was truly a life changing event. I can walk now without pain, and have started working out again. I can actually do squats lower than I have been able to in many years! I’m looking forward to a summer running around outside with my kids too. The healing has been fantastic. I couldn’t be happier!

I just had my second hip replacement surgery with Dr. O’Neill. I am 9 weeks out from the date of surgery and could not be happier with the results. My favorite pass time is golf. I just walked 18 holes and feel great. The big difference from my first replacement was the timing of the procedure. I was more proactive with the second surgery. I didn’t wait for the pain to become as bad as it was with my first hip replacement. Once again, consulting with Dr. O’Neill we decided to go ahead and correct my hip issue. Just like last time, the whole team experience at TCO was absolutely awesome. I would totally recommend this procedure for anyone experiencing hip issues. Many thanks to Dr. O’Neill and his entire team at TCO!

I had been having pain and discomfort in my right knee since high school. At one point, I literally had to hike backwards on the Superior Hiking Trail! After that, my general physician referred me to Dr. Owen O’Neill. I began receiving cortisone injections periodically, eventually having arthroscopic surgery on my right knee in 2009. Now at the age of 70, it was time for a knee replacement. Dr. O’Neill and his team provided a comprehensive Knee Replacement Protocol that I followed to be ready for surgery and recovery post-surgery.

Following surgery, I began physical therapy at TCO’s Edina Minnesota Drive location with Josh Rolfes. I looked forward to my time with Josh. He made our time together fun and helped me understand that, while some of the exercises would hurt, I would not hurt my knee. That helped me! Josh was always prepared. He had something new for me each session and was very encouraging. Now 9 weeks after surgery, you wouldn’t guess I had a knee replacement. The surgery team is top notch. And just as important, the physical therapy post-surgery is vital to a complete recovery! Thank you all! I can’t say enough good things about TCO, and particularly Dr. O’Neill, Isabel, Ann, Casey and Josh.

I had was thrilled that my anterior hip replacement went so well! I had a posterior hip replacement in 2020 and needed to have the other hip done in 2023. I opted to have an anterior procedure this time and was extremely happy with the results. I had very little pain, which Tylenol handled well. Everyone was surprised how well I was moving around shortly after the surgery. Recovery has been much easier than with the posterior approach. Dr. Owen O’Neill is amazing. He explains everything ahead of time and what to expect. His team of nurses and staff are the very best and the EXCEL Program was definitely the way to go!

I’m 48 years and had hip replacement surgery. I choose Dr. O’Neill since he does the anterior approach. It’s been 10 weeks since my surgery and I am pain free. I actually played basketball 10 weeks after surgery. I can’t believe how much better I feel and I wish I would have done it sooner. Dr. O’Neill was great and I would highly recommend him.

I had my surgery with Dr. O’Neill and couldn’t be happier with the outcome. I was somewhat apprehensive because the replacement of my right knee with another surgeon did not go well. Knowing this, he answered all of my questions and calmed my fears. He was 100% right with everything he told me. Surgery went great and he came up to my room that evening to check on me, even though he was unsure if he would have time to stop by. His whole team was great. They were very thorough and caring. It’s been years since running without pain. This golf season I plan on walking the courses again! Thank you so much.

I am in my mid 50s and very active. By the time I came to TCO I was ready for a hip replacement. In our first appointment, Dr. O’Neill handed me the implant, explained exactly how it functioned, and described the approach he would use to implant the device. He gave me a realistic timeframe of my return to normalcy. I appreciated his technical approach and confidence that he had with the expected results. My experience was exactly how he had shared with me prior to surgery. I am already back playing sports, biking, and doing a lot of walking. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and his wonderful staff!

My experience with Dr. Owen O’Neill and his team exceeded my expectations. Dr. O’Neill is personable, professional, so knowledgeable, and has the patient’s best interest when proceeding with a procedure. I had hip replacement surgery and would highly recommend this to anyone who is thinking of having it to make their quality of life better. I couldn’t walk straight and Dr. O’Neill fixed that. I have my balance back and I’m so happy with the results.

With the advice of professionals and my own research, I was searching for the best doctor and Dr. O’Neill fit the bill on every level. He and his staff were very informative and covered everything that was going to happen and could happen. Ann, his care coordinator, was so timely and helpful with my scheduling and helping me at every turn, even when I had to reschedule. Isabel, Dr. O’Neill’s physician assistant, was so organized and got back to me quickly whenever I had a question. Casey, the other Physician Assistant, was so helpful as well. From the time when I walked in the door at TCO, to the person greeting me, to all of my interactions with staff, and right up to Dr O’Neill himself, everyone was so professional, friendly, and helpful. TCO is like a well-oiled machine with a warm human touch.

My life has been given back to me. I was on a crutch for 8 months. I can walk anywhere with no aids now. I am back at the gym 5-6 days a week, and will resume my golfing this summer. I was back on my feet very quickly with minimal discomfort and virtually little to no pain in the first few days after surgery. Walking normally seems like a miracle and it is. All thanks to Dr. Owen O’Neill and his high expertise, his many years of experience, high volume of surgeries performed, and his excellent staff. If you are looking for a top notch Doctor, then Dr. Owen O’Neill is the one to see for the best results ever!

This experience has been what I was hoping for. After doing extensive research on most highly recommended surgeons for knee replacement, I was fortunate enough to get in to see Dr. Owen O’Neill at TCO. Everything was explained in detail, a class was offered, I was given support people to call with my pre-and post-surgery questions (and believe me I had many). The compassion, care, intelligence, skill, was unsurpassed and beyond my expectation. The physical therapy support at TCO was sensational. I had many concerns and they were addressed. I was encouraged and custom therapy sessions were given to me by their outstanding staff and reassurance that I was progressing was given.

An outstanding PT person at TCO Edina, was Kari. She knew when I was struggling, frustrated and encouraged me that the outcome would be worth it. It was. Few things I would recommend to others: wait to see a quality surgeon. I highly recommend Dr. Owen O’Neill, and I am very particular and do my research. Rent an ice machine for after care. Do your physical therapy on schedule. Find ways to comfortably elevate your leg and sleep. Book all your physical therapy appointments with people that you are can relate to and understand you and are patient. Check with the doctor if you are concerned. I was skeptical if this was the right course of action and there is no doubt in my mind now, it was the best decision.

I had a left knee replacement in September 2020 and my right knee was done in September 2022. Both knee replacements were completed by Dr. Owen O’Neill. First of all, his team is exceptional! His care team called me at home to address questions I sent via email. His care coordinator, Ann, is the best in the business! They had fast replies to my  questions, even when I stated it wasn’t an emergency. After my left knee surgery, I was hitting golf balls in the garage after two months and golfing in Florida after three months. With my right knee, I am playing pickleball and golfing in the simulator after two months.

As those of you who have had knee replacements know, it’s a tough few weeks but it’s well worth it! Stick to your physical therapy. I doubled up on PT at home, going above what they advised, and bought a cheap stationary bike to improve my range of motion. I’m looking forward to walking 18 holes again in the summer. If you’re thinking of getting knee replacement, don’t wait! I can’t recommend Dr. O’Neill, Isabel and Ann enough! They’re the best. I should mention, I’ve seen some ugly scars when people have a knee replacement, but my scars are barely noticeable because Dr. O’Neil uses glue instead of staples. That’s just another reason to choose him!

Dr. O’Neill and his entire staff are beyond amazing to work with. Four years prior to seeing Dr. O’Neill, I had hip reconstruction for a labrum tear and reshaping of the ball and socket. I was hoping that surgery would be the fix. Eventually I developed severe arthritis and needed a full new hip. My husband had already had a hip and a knee surgery with Dr. O’Neill, so I knew he was my choice for this surgery.

He knew I had a trip planned in November which would require hiking and he promised me I would be ready. I had surgery on August 8, 2022 and was walking in post-op and at the recovery center. I was off a walker and walking with a cane in my neighborhood within 5 days post-op. The only pain I would tell you to be prepared for is the thigh pain. One would assume pain in the surgery area but this was not the case. I had quite a bit of swelling in the hip/thigh for almost 8 weeks. Overall, I felt better and better every day for the first 5 weeks. Note – You MUST WALK a lot and push through the pain! I also would say that until my swelling was gone, my leg felt a little bit longer. Once the swelling was gone it felt perfect!

I unfortunately had a slight set back around week 6, and I ended up getting bursitis in my hip/leg which I found out at my 8-week appt. I did PT for 4 weeks, and then at week 15 I was able to climb Machu Picchu with ZERO PAIN! We were on a trip to Peru where we walked or hiked every day and my average steps per day were between 13,500 – 17,500. We averaged 7/8 miles a day! So, when Dr. O’Neil tells you that you will be able to anything you want after 12 weeks, he is 100% correct! Just have to put your mind to your rehab/recovery and you can do it. I have referred him to several people and will continue to do so! Thank you again for everything!

Dr. O’Neill is clearly skilled and devoted to the best care he can deliver to his clients. I have suffered for many years with hip pain. I used anti-inflammatories and excellent physical therapy to get me through many decades of pain and mild disability. I was very, very devoted and determined to avoid surgery but alas, it was the answer. Dr. O’Neill was the first provider to identify that I have congenital hip dysplasia! He was very conscientious and attentive to my concerns and questions. In addition, his staff was excellent, responding quickly to all concerns. I was well prepared for surgery by them and well cared for post-op. I am a nurse myself and I recommend him highly! In addition, the nursing care I received at Fairview Southdale was top notch, even as they were very short staffed. Kudos!

I had my left knee replaced a little over a year ago. I could not be more satisfied! I have no pain or limitation. Yesterday I walked all 18 holes golfing. I would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill to anyone who is having knee problems.

I have now had both of my hips replaced. The first one, in 2018, was a lateral approach and the second one in May 2022. The second one was performed by Dr. Owen O’Neill and was a minimally invasive anterior approach.

I recovered much faster with the second surgery and was able to move around easier right after surgery. I was walking without the aid of a walker or cane much sooner and was walking about a block after the first week. I also did not have to have physical therapy with the second surgery.

I did have a fair amount of swelling in my thigh, but as I approach 4 months, the swelling is mostly gone unless I sit in the car for long periods of time or I am up on my feet for most of the day. It diminishes quickly once I sit and elevate my leg. There is pain and discomfort with this type of surgery, but it diminished much quicker and I needed less pain medication.

Both of my legs are now the same length, which makes activity much easier and I do not have the sharp, stabbing pain when stepping down on a very arthritic hip.

I recommend the minimally invasive anterior approach and would seek care again from Dr. O’Neill, if I needed more orthopedic surgery. I found him to be very competent, caring and approachable.

I would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill to anyone needing hip replacement

I am 72 years old, am 4 days post op and walking around! I cannot differentiate my new hip from my remaining hip. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill. The man is a rock star!

Dr. O’Neill and his staff are top notch. From the initial consultation, to the post-surgical follow up and office visits, I couldn’t be happier. My situation was unique in that it required additional pre-surgical bone scans and input from my Cardiologist and Anti-Coagulant team. Every voice was heard, including my own, and a plan was made and executed. Thanks again to Isabel, Dr. O’Neill’s physician assistant, and the rest of his team. You’re the best!

After delaying the hip replacement for six years, I now know what a mistake that procrastination was. Walking within hours of the surgery and even climbing stairs was a pleasant surprise and bonus with only 24+ hours in the hospital. The considerate, professional preparation and follow up, involving all aspects related to the surgery was beyond my expectations. I have already referred three acquaintances to Dr. O’Neill and will consistently advocate for his approach to this problem. My recovery has been without incidence and a pleasure under his staff’s guidance. Don’t put off your chance to be ‘renewed’……this is a professional team that knows what they’re doing.

Four years ago, I was experiencing some hip discomfort on my right side. I just assumed it was because of my active lifestyle and some muscle soreness. There were 2 people I worked with that both had hip replacements from Dr. Owen O’Neill, so they encouraged me to seek him out. Sure enough, there was some arthritis that was causing that discomfort. I endured it for 4 years because it was never that painful. However, it reached a “bone-on-bone” stage where it needed replacing. I was prepared for the worst in my mind, but the entire process was so smooth and worry free, that it was hard to believe I actually had a major surgical procedure. I was up on my feet and off the walker within 3-4 days. Swimming, walking and riding my bike within 3 weeks, and back to golfing at 8 weeks. I jokingly asked Dr. O’Neill if my golf game would improve after this procedure, and he said if it did, he would like to take credit for that as well and maybe start marketing his services in that manner. Let me say that my golf game is no better, but no worse, as I am back taking some much needed golf lessons. The entire staff at TCO has been absolutely top notch all around!

I’ve always been an athlete and at almost 57, the advanced osteoarthritis impacted my quality of life. Dr. O’Neill was very straight forward with my options. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill for total hip replacement and wish I’d done it sooner! I’m now able to walk without pain or a limp, stand up without pain and was able to return to biking and CrossFit after 8 weeks. I can even cover 2 miles in 32 minutes when walking and haven’t walked that fast in years! I’m in a better mood and overall happier without the chronic pain and limitations.

When I met with Dr. O’Neill for my post-op check-up seven weeks post-surgery (anterior hip replacement), I told him he was a genius. I can’t say enough good things about him and the staff at TCO. From my first meeting, through surgery and post-op, Dr. O’Neill listened to me and sought to understand my situation. He was caring and compassionate, knowledgeable, thorough and encouraging. I felt confident in his ability to help me, and at ease under his care. I was surprisingly calm as I faced major surgery.

The entire staff was always available to answer my questions (and I had a LOT!) and when I met personally with Dr. O’Neill, he seemed to “settle in”, not in a hurry to move on to the next patient. Pre- and post-op instructions from both TCO and the hospital were very clear.

I had some conflicting diagnoses prior to seeing Dr. O’Neill but from my first visit with him, I knew he was on the right track. I had struggled with back and hip pain for 18 months and lost much of my mobility, and my zest for life. Dr. O’Neill and his team gave that back to me and as I look ahead to retirement in a few days, I’m so grateful that I will be able to be an active, ALIVE participant in life. Many thanks to Dr. O’Neill and staff!

I’m in my early 60’s and am very active. I have played competitive (including professional) baseball since I was 8 years old and now play in an over 50 league. Since I pitch, that means I have been rotating and pushing off my right hip for over 55 years. I developed the classic ‘bone on bone’ scenario. If I wanted to ‘stay in the game’ and continue to pitch, I needed to have my right hip replaced. I met with Dr. O’Neill and his team and they walked me through everything and what to expect. The procedure went great and the aftercare and follow-up have been second to none! I’m well on my way to continuing to be very active and am able to play the sport I love. I would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and his entire team!

The past three years with a progressive arthritic hip, had been frustrating and painful, putting a real damper on my abilities and quality of life. I stubbornly hoped therapies, good diet and bone supplements might provide enough relief and they didn’t. I finally sought out Dr. Owen O’Neill to move forward with surgery. Within weeks following surgery, I became ecstatic at how miraculous the outcome was. I quickly was able to work, play and do all that I wanted, and completely pain free! Dr. O’Neill, his P.A. Isabel, and team hold a stellar reputation. Their expertise and especially warm and compassionate report, along with that of the diverse staff and nurses at Fairview, all helped contribute to my incredible experience and outcome.

Dr. O’Neill and the whole team at TCO are amazing. They are attentive, caring and make you feel like you are the only patient. I was walking with assistance shortly after surgery and walking unassisted 3 days later. My recovery was swift and I was back to normal life 3 weeks later. Every time I needed to speak with Dr. O’Neill or the TCO staff, they were available 24/7. I recommend Dr. O’Neill to anyone that needs hip surgery. He is now taking care of my knee and I have full confidence in him.

I am a retired 66 year old who likes to be active and I’ve had knee pain for years. The pain got to the point where I knew I needed a treatment plan. After some research, I chose Dr. O’Neill and am very happy with my choice. After trying a cortisone shot, which unfortunately did not help, I ended up having back to back total knee replacements, with the first knee surgery in July 2021 and the second knee surgery in December 2021. Dr. O’Neill and his staff explained the whole process, from the surgery itself to recovery expectations, and physical therapy. Both surgeries went GREAT!!

Recovery was just as Dr. O’Neill said it would be and much easier than I personally expected. After my July surgery, I was able to go fishing at Lake of the Woods with no issues after 6 weeks. I also went on a fishing trip in Canada with friends at 8 weeks post-op. I just had my 8 week follow-up for my second knee and all is well. I am looking forward to a busy summer enjoying the outdoors.

I strongly recommended Dr. O’Neill, his staff and the TCO Physical Therapy Program to anybody with knee pain. Thank you Dr. O’Neill. What you do is really a miracle!!

Everything about Dr. Owen O’Neill, his team, TCO and the EXCEL Program were top notch. From pre-surgical prep, through surgery, post-op and rehab I have been impressed. If you want peace of mind for your orthopedic medical matters then Dr. O’Neill is your clear choice. My recent Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery was a great success!

I have had several prior knee surgeries from competitive sports injuries over the past 25 years, all performed by the same renowned and outstanding knee surgeon. That doctor was the “go to” person for knee surgeries! I always knew that I would eventually need a TKR so when “my” doctor retired 2 years ago, I started researching the current state of TKR technology and the very top surgeons who had the expertise in using that technology. Having professional experience in the med-tech industry, I knew what I was looking for and took my time evaluating the top docs in the field.

Dr. Owen O’Neill was a clear standout surgeon with an outstanding team and years of experience in the TKR arena. He was also an expert in the latest medical devices and surgical techniques with a proven track record. And I decided “that’s the doctor” I want to be “my” doctor, taking care of my knees and any future orthopedic medical matters I may encounter. I am strongly recommending Dr. O’Neill to my friends and fellow athletes.

My experience with Dr. O’Neill and the EXCEL Program team could not have been any better. From the preparation to surgery and follow-up, things exceeded my expectations. Speaking from experience, if you are in need of a hip replacement, this is your guy!

My experience with TCO has been amazing. I started having problems sleeping when I was coaching my two sons in hockey. Dr. Vorlicky correctly identified the issue with my hip and put a monitoring plan in place. I was still able to do the activities I wanted to and we took steps to make sure I could still be active and eliminate many regular sleepless nights. We were able to defer surgery for several years.

When we determined it was time to take action, Dr. Vorlicky connected me to Dr. O’Neill and after our first meeting I was completely relieved and very comfortable going forward with hip replacement surgery. I was offered two different dates as options for surgery, provided all the written information needed to explain how to prepare and what to expect before, during, and after surgery, and attended an online class to further answer questions before my procedure.
From the moment I checked in on the day of surgery until the moment I was discharged the next day, I was super pleased with every interaction with every professional during my stay. The surgery was a complete success, and Dr. O’Neill visited me the following morning before I was discharged, along with the PT staff to cover all the post-surgery best practices to minimize pain and explain the exercises that would speed my recovery. It was amazing how fast I was up and around with limited assistance, and I never took any pain medication other than Tylenol.

I would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and all the fine physicians at TCO, and would encourage anyone considering hip replacement to speak to Dr. O’Neill, as my experience was “off the charts” excellent! Since the surgery, I have been very active. In the first 40 days after receiving full clearance for activities, I have been downhill skiing in Colorado and snowmobiled over 150 miles in one weekend, all without any pain or discomfort and more enjoyable than if I had done these activities prior to hip replacement. Prior to hip replacement, there is no doubt there would be pain, discomfort, and limited sleep. Many doctors can do procedures, but Dr. O’Neill and the folks at TCO, from my experience, EXCEL at the procedures they perform. If a person wants the best, it’s TCO!

I just had my 2 month post-surgery appointment with Dr. O’Neill, and am thrilled to report that everything about the preparation, actual surgery, and post-surgery follow-up has been nothing less than spectacular! Every single interaction that I had with the good Doctor and his amazing team exceeded my highest expectations. Prior to the surgery, his team provided helpful information and prepared me on what to expect throughout the entire process. Every single member of the team was incredibly professional and welcoming. It always felt like they had all of the time in the world for me. They wanted to make sure that my concerns were answered and my experience with them was top notch. Dr. O’Neill has an amazing reputation based upon his surgical skill and dedication. My experience is another testament to his proficiency and expertise. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. O’Neill and his team for anyone considering a hip replacement. I am so excited going forward to enjoy life with my new hip.

Nothing short of medical miracles are being performed by Dr. Owen O’Neill! It’s hard to find the words to describe the pre- and post-surgical experiences I’ve had with him and the entire TCO team…other than “surreal”. I had my first anterior hip replacement by Dr. O’Neill in 2016. I knew, in time, my other hip would need to be replaced as well. Prior to meeting with Dr. O’Neill, I initially consulted with 3 other surgeons regarding the condition of my hips. There was no question after consulting with him that he was the surgeon for the job!

On November 9th, my other hip was replaced by Dr. O’Neill. For both surgeries, I was a part of the EXCEL Program and was treated with the utmost professional care, respect and compassion. It was beyond any other surgical experiences I’ve had. The entire process (for both hip surgeries) went extremely smooth; including the pre-op appointments, information and billing, to the follow-through, staff communications, etc.

Like many other patients, I was up and moving around within 4 hours of my surgery. I was walking and doing laps around the nursing station and looking at the stunning new TCO EXCEL Care Suites. It’s crazy to comprehend that a person is even capable of walking or climbing stairs after having a new “part” put in. I was so extremely happy with my recovery from the first surgery. Within a few weeks I was able to return to work and resume many of my normal activities.

Dr. O’Neill and his amazing staff are hands-down some of the most qualified, experienced, kind, and thorough medical professionals and care-givers a patient could hope for. One of the other big stand-out components of my experience was being part of the TCO EXCEL Program. What a master-minded, brilliant concept! It’s comprehensive, thorough, extremely well-organized, patient-focused, with beautiful and comfortable care suites. Not to mention, includes one post-op bill that you are informed about prior to your surgery! Hip, Hip, Hooray! I have 2 new hips now and I’m looking forward to getting outside to indulge in my winter sports and activities, soon!

Dr. O’Neill replaced both of my knees. The surgeries went well and the physical therapy at TCO was effective and painless. Just 8 weeks after the second surgery, I am walking without a cane…pain free! Dr. O’Neill and his team are wonderful.

Dr. O’Neill replaced both of my hips in 2017. Life has been wonderful!! It’s been four years with no pain!

Right away at my first appointment with Dr. Owen O’Neill, I felt confident that his knowledge and experience with hip surgery made him an excellent choice for my procedure. I immediately decided to go ahead with his recommendation of hip replacement. Working with his team after the appointment was extremely easy and I was scheduled for surgery within three weeks.

I would recommend anterior hip replacement to anyone who needs hip replacement surgery. Dr. O’Neill and his team had me walking two hours after surgery. Three days later, I felt comfortable waking without the walker. After two weeks of increasing my walking with more household activities, I felt confident in driving my van. Eventually I was back to hiking on local nature trails, which I hadn’t done in ten months. Six weeks after surgery, I got back on my Harley Davidson and could ride again, which I also wasn’t able to do for ten months.

I would recommend Dr. O’Neill and his team to anyone who would benefit from having hip replacement surgery. They allowed me to get my life back. I was on the road to a total sedentary life before my surgery. I was pain free only when I was sitting or lying down. Thank you Dr. O’Neill.

Dr. O’Neill and his very professional team provided excellent care related to my anterior right hip replacement. I had my left hip done with a posterior procedure at another medical facility and the anterior procedure was a night and day different experience. Dr. O’Neill performed the surgery at 9:30am and I was at home recovering at 7:00pm. I was fully recovered after 6 weeks but back to usual activities in 3 weeks. The posterior left hip surgery resulted in muscle spasms that lasted 6 months and impaired usual activities and driving in some form for that length of time. I could not believe the difference in these surgeries. I definitely recommend Dr. O’Neill and the anterior procedure

After years of pain, I finally decided to look into knee surgery. A colleague referred me to Dr. Owen O’Neill and I am forever thankful that he did. Dr. O’Neill did a complete knee replacement for me and every aspect of it was professional and compassionate. Every appointment was on time, every communication from the team was excellent, and the surgery was such a success that I am going to have him correct my other knee. Dr. O’Neill not only changed my life but also my family’s lives. I am able to walk without pain and keep up with the family on vacations, and more. My overall attitude is so much better due to the lack of pain I had been experiencing for so many years. Do yourself a favor and stop putting the procedure off and take care of yourself with Dr. O’Neill. Your family will be glad you did.

I really appreciate Dr. Owen O’Neill and the entire TCO Staff. I had a long-standing knee injury that progressed to near immobility. I had a rapid recovery thanks to Dr. O’Neill, the entire staff and the EXCEL program. I was back at work in record time.

I have had a hip replacement and knee replacement with Dr. Owen O’Neill. Both procedures ended with excellent results. If you are considering either procedure, I would recommend Dr. O’Neill.

I have now had both hips replaced by Dr. O’Neill! My first was in March 2018 and my second was in March 2021. Because my first replacement was so successful and my recovery was so fast, of course I went back to Dr. O’Neill! I have also recommended him to my friends – he’s THAT good! The anterior procedure really makes getting “back to normal” so easy. I am happy to say I am pain free and back to all of my sports and activities. THANK YOU, Dr. O’Neill!

It has been 3 years already since both of my hips were replaced by Dr. Owen O’Neill. What an awesome guy and surgeon. I am so happy and continue to explore new activities that were not an option to me prior to surgery. I would like to schedule an appointment just to give him a hug. Thank you, Dr. O’Neill!

After 3+ years of hip pain (which progressively got worse), I was referred to Dr. Owen O’Neill by a friend who had undergone a hip replacement by him many years ago. I was immediately impressed, not only by Dr. O’Neill’s extensive experience with this surgery, but also by his ability to communicate the procedure in layman’s terms and put me at ease with the overall process. This was a process and procedure I was very uncomfortable with initially. I’m now 2+ months post-surgery and, for the first time in years, am no longer spending each day suffering while engaging in simple ordinary day-to-day tasks. I look forward to getting back to all the outdoor activities I enjoy and thank Dr. O’Neill for getting me back on track to do so!

KS95’s Ryan is one of the most well-known radio personalities in Minnesota, but for 7 years, he hid a painful secret from listeners.

Ryan’s hips had gotten so bad, he could no longer walk. At his breaking point, Ryan turned to TCO, a decision that would change his life.

After several years of hip pain, I decided to seek help. I heard about Dr. Owen O’Neill through a friend who had a hip replacement. Dr. O’Neill was thorough and attentive. He made me feel confident in the surgery and recovery plan. I could not be happier with my care from start to finish. The whole process went exceptionally well. His whole team should be commended for their support and professionalism!

A friend referred me to Dr. Owen O’Neill when I learned that I would need a hip replacement and I’m so glad he did. Dr. O’Neill and his whole team made my experience an extremely good one. I had my surgery 2 months ago and I am now pain-free! Prior to my surgery, standing up was so painful that I had to wait a few seconds before I could walk. I am a pretty active person and I thought it was just a muscular issue so I tried to ignore the pain and just stretch all of the time. Now it is a different story.

I finally have no pain and can walk without a limp. For the winter, I brought my road bike inside and put it on a trainer. I ride every day and can’t wait for nice weather to come back around! My recovery went so well that I went back to work part-time in 2 weeks after the surgery! I was first told by another surgeon about a posterior method to replace my hip. He said it would be a 6-week recovery. I would definitely recommend Dr. O’Neill to others and the Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery that he does. In fact, I already have. My family and friends are amazed by my recovery. I am a Dental Hygienist and my patients can’t believe I just had my hip replaced. Thank you so much to Dr. O’Neill and his whole team for taking such good care of me!

Having Dr. O’Neill and his team perform anterior hip replacement at age 51 was an exceptional decision. Before the surgery, I was in constant pain and unable to enjoy two of my passions – backpacking and biking. The pain kept me awake at night. Just standing up from a chair was difficult. Now I am pain free, strong and enjoying backpacking and biking again. My recovery has exceeded all my expectations. I am currently training to hike to the bottom and back to the rim of the Grand Canyon. My surgically repaired hip is smoother, stronger and more flexible than my natural hip and it has only been 10 weeks since my surgery.

The only thing I would do different is have the surgery done sooner. I stayed one night in the comfort suite and went home with a cane. The first few days after surgery were painful, however the physical therapy exercises and icing were a big help. Every time I went for a walk I felt better. By day 6, I used trekking poles for my outdoor walks. I am glad I took two weeks off from work to rest and recover.

Dr. O’Neill has a caring, supportive, compassionate and wise team who gave my great instructions to speed my recovery. They also provided a helpful booklet. I did extensive research and have family and friends in the medical field. It was clear that the anterior approach was my best option and Dr. O’Neill, and his team, are the best providers of this procedure.

After my knee surgery with Dr. Chris Larson, it was time to move on to my hip issue. Dr. Larson referred me to Dr. Owen O’Neill. We reviewed my X-ray, showing the gap in my hip had closed to become bone on bone. My research showed that waiting for surgery would only make matters worse. Dr. O’Neill and I agreed that an anterior replacement of my right hip would be the best course of action. I would recommend anyone with hip issues to see Dr. O’Neill to evaluate their issues and find a path forward.

As for the post hip replacement procedure…I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WITH THE RESULTS. I had minimal pain afterwards and was walking within 4 hours after surgery. I am an avid golfer and could not walk the course last summer. It will be awesome to walk pain free this summer. Thanks to Dr. O’Neill and the entire staff at TCO. They all have been terrific to work with.

Dr. Owen O’Neill and his team were very professional. They answered all of my questions. I can now walk with normal gait again and my lower leg isn’t bowing out any more. Physical therapy quickly helped me back to my usual activity. I’m keeping up with my exercises so I can keep improving my strength. I am looking forward to getting back to water skiing and camping by the summer. Thank you Dr. O’Neill and your team. If I need any future surgeries, Dr. O’Neill will be doing it!

I have a wonderful success story! I had a bad hip fracture in April 2019, which an ER physician repaired with screws. For the next 18 months, I suffered pain and increasing disability. In the meantime, my right leg shortened, so that I walked very poorly. I consulted Dr. Owen O’Neill because of his excellent reputation and because I wanted a solution that would allow me to resume an active lifestyle. In my late 70s, I was not ready to give up!

Dr. O’Neill impressed me on my first visit. He explained my X-rays, the advantages of his surgical approach, and answered all of my questions with thoroughness and care. To make a long story short, I felt less pain post-surgery than I had in the past year and a half! The length of my right leg was restored, and I could walk unassisted within a week. After one month, I was able to travel to New York to spend Thanksgiving with my daughter and her family. I am deeply grateful to Dr. O’Neill and his team of caregivers for all of their help. Thanks to them, I have my life back!

I went to my family doctor with a lot of pain in my right hip. Right away, he referred me to Twin Cities Orthopedics and Dr. Owen O’Neill. He said that if his mother had a bad hip, this was the doctor he wanted her to see. Dr. O’Neill took x-rays, examined me, and said the hip would only get worse in time and that I should let him replace it. As it was, I could no longer golf or drive without using my hand under my right knee to lift my foot from the gas pedal to the brake, and vice versa. I could not do stairs! Still, I put off surgery for a while and when I could no longer stand the pain, I put aside my fear of surviving surgery (at my age of 77 years) and asked him to help me.

He replaced my hip and after 2 days, I was home on a walker. 10 days later, I was walking around my house with a cane. Then on my next visit, I was walking on my own just like my old self – NO cane and NO limp! Soon, I’ll be playing golf with my friends and teenaged grandchildren. I just had my 5 year re-check and am doing great. I will see Dr. O’Neill in another 5 years. Oh yeah, and I have a very small amount of visible scar tissue on the front of my right thigh and hip level. We are blessed to have TCO here in our area and, of course, Dr. Owen O’Neill.

I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Owen O’Neill and his orthopedic team through the entire process. I had my surgery eight weeks ago and am doing very well. The severe pain that I had before the surgery is gone and I am back doing my normal activities with very minimal difficulty. If and when my other knee needs relief, I will not hesitate to have Dr. O’Neill do the surgery. I have total confidence in him and would highly recommend him to others.

Dr. O’Neill and his staff are highly skilled, efficient, and professional in all their work. I was very impressed from the start of my evaluation to the rehab process, after a total knee replacement. This is truly the “A” team!

I would highly recommend Dr. Owen O’Neill and his team to perform anterior hip replacement surgery; and through the EXCEL Program, if you qualify. I am accustomed to a high level of customer service, due to my previous profession, and have to say I was blown away by the professional service I received from the first call to the final check up by the entire team! They also did an excellent job in managing my safety during Covid-19. Dr. O’Neill doesn’t push the surgery, but explains the details of your situation, options available and lets you decide. He is extremely knowledgeable and demonstrates his concern for you and your situation. He is genuinely a great guy.

Prior to surgery I was able to still do activities like golf and pickleball, but had a hard time enjoying them, due to hip pain that was only getting worse. After the surgery, I bounced back very quickly. I was walking 2 miles by the 2nd week post-op and felt 85% at 8 weeks, doing most things I love. At 10 weeks post-op, I played two rounds of golf and four hours of pickleball in 2 days and had no pain. Frankly, I was amazed that I was able to enjoy my activities and no longer have to compensate for pain. If your quality of life is not what you want due to hip issues, I encourage you to go see Dr. O’Neill and his team at TCO! I would also encourage you to dedicate time to do the pre and post-op exercises they ask you perform. I think that also made a big difference in the recovery time. LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone at TCO and the EXCEL program. I made a good choice to go with them. They are very nice and professional. With two knees, bone on bone, I could not move very well at all. I met with Dr. Owen O’Neill and needed surgery to replace my knees. Dr. O’Neill answered all of the questions that my wife and I had. He made us feel very comfortable, as did his TCO team. I would recommend Dr. O’Neill to everyone I talk to and I would recommend the surgery and therapy, if you want to get back on your feet and moving again. Now, after two knee replacements, I am feeling great and am moving around very well for the first time in years. I put it off so long and should have acted quicker. If you are in the same shape that I was, call TCO for a consult. TCO does everything from knees to hips, shoulders, etc. Thank you TCO and team!

I had hip replacement surgery with Dr. O’Neill on October 13, 2020 and everything went smoothly. I could barely walk into the facility on the day of surgery and had less pain after the surgery. The staff at the overnight facility was great. My recovery went very well and my hip felt noticeably better each day. I just got approved to play golf again just 8 weeks after surgery.

On October 19, 2020, I had a total hip replacement by Dr. Owen O’Neill. I was nervous and worried about having surgery, especially during a pandemic. Dr. O’Neill relieved my anxiety as he explained the whole process and answered all of my questions. He also noted that I was a candidate for the EXCEL program, which was an awesome alternative to the hospital. His confidence and compassion made me realize that I was making the right decision.

On the morning of my surgery, Dr. O’Neill (with a BIG smile) came into my room to reassure me that everything was going to go smoothly. He is without a doubt a highly skilled surgeon! I am pain free and couldn’t be happier. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. O’Neill and the entire TCO & EXCEL staff. They are absolutely AMAZING!! THANK YOU Dr. O’Neill.

I needed both hips replaced during this Covid-19 ordeal and a dear friend recommended Dr. O’Neill. I made the virtual appointment, talked to him and got on that list to have surgery when the hospitals allowed surgery. I had my first hip replacement in June and it was perfect. I had the other done in September with the same results! Dr. O’Neill was very reassuring that I would get back to my old self again and I have! The whole team was excellent! Prep for the surgery was very important and I did my best to get my body ready. I would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill to anyone for hip surgery!

Dr. Owen O’Neill and his team did a phenomenal job restoring me to my previous activities, pain-free. After 2 surgeries to replace both hips and 3.5 months of healing, I returned to biking, walked without impediment and resumed daily activities – like putting on socks with ease. As the healing continues, I look forward to returning to cross-country skiing and rollerblading. On the journey, Dr. O’Neill and his staff answered my many questions about the procedure and pre and post-op preparations. Most impressively, the surgery:

  • Allowed me to walk the same day of the surgery
  • Required only 1 incision
  • Cut no muscle
  • Involved zero narcotics for the pain; only some Tylenol for a couple of weeks following

Many thanks to Dr. O’Neill and his staff for all the help, patience, skill and expertise they brought to return me to a more active life!

I had hip replacement surgery through the EXCEL program in June 2020. I was terrified to have surgery, but in unbearable pain. My life had come to a halt due to limited mobility and pain, so replacement was my only option. Dr. Owen O’Neill offered me reassurance that he “would get me through this” and he did exactly that! The pain following surgery is so much less than the pain before. Every staff I had contact with was professional, kind and compassionate, which put me at ease. Their knowledge and skill was notable. I had PT through TCO after surgery and again, with excellent staff, and I made good progress. Before surgery I did not even get 500 steps a day on my Fitbit, but now I easily get 10-12,000, without using a cane! I can put on my socks and shoes without pain. I can get into my car without intense pain. Sitting, standing, walking and sleeping are all pain-free now. I am eternally grateful to Dr. O’Neill and all the staff at TCO in their clinic and EXCEL program. As a nurse, and as a patient, I would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and the TCO EXCEL program. I feel like I have my life back again, and this is huge!

I had a total hip replacement August 4, 2020 at the age of 55. Dr. Owen O’Neill‘s team was so fantastic before, during and after surgery! I wasn’t one who wanted to know the details of how the surgery would be performed but knew that I would feel better once it was done. The team provided information, answered my questions, and I felt they were there with me all the way, figuratively holding my hand through the process. Friends and neighbors would tell me it will be so much better after surgery, but I had no idea how right they were. We talk about our pain level on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the worst pain you can imagine. Life before surgery had been a constant 5 or 6 and I would need over the counter pain relief 2 to 3 times a week to get to sleep. Since the surgery, my pain level was a 2 for a few days and I hit 3 once when I moved wrong. I didn’t need the pain relief medication beyond the recommended 2 weeks (I probably didn’t really need it that long but I follow rules). I have been walking every day and have worked up to 30 minute walks which I had not been able to do for almost a year prior to surgery. At 7 weeks post-surgery I was cleared to return to normal activity level. I was happy to be able to mow the lawn. I’ve been raking leaves and looking forward to shoveling snow this winter. I am so thrilled that I can be active and not have the pain. Thank you Dr. Owen O’Neill and team!! I would highly recommend your team to anyone I meet who is in need of a new hip!

I had a total hip replacement performed by Dr. Owen O’Neill in July 2020. My daughter, a PA at TCO, recommended Dr. O’Neill. My experience with Dr. O’Neill, his staff, the surgery center and the Excel Program was nothing short of outstanding. The entire process, from preparation/education to post surgery care was seamless, professional and compassionate. My recovery was unbelievably fast and easy. I am so grateful to Dr. O’Neill for helping me get to get back to long walks, biking and pain free living!

I am 82 years old and had my hip surgery on July 17, 2020. I received lot of information on how to prepare for surgery and what to expect afterwards. Surgery went well and I was out of the hospital the next day. I was given exercises to perform and didn’t need any other therapy. I also was given adequate pain medication during and after the procedure. I was up and walking almost immediately. I only needed a walker for 3 days and a cane for 10 days. It takes some time for pain from exercise to heal to but each day improves. After 6 to 8 weeks there has been no pain and no restrictions on movements. I have more flexibility now than I had before surgery. I would do it again and I definitely recommend Dr. Owen O’Neill.

Every day I get up and say “NO MORE PAIN!” At age 77 I’m back to doing the activities I enjoy! It wasn’t easy but the outcome was terrific! My love of ice skating and snowshoeing is now in sight. Dr. Owen O’Neill and his staff were so patient answering all of my questions from the first visit, after surgery, and during the follow up visits. I have one more knee to go but with prayers and Dr. O’Neill, I’ll be ready!

In May of 2019 I had a total knee operation done at a different practice. Three months later I was having issues and went back to the same doctor. He said he didn’t know what it was and that I should come back in one year. I returned twice in June of 2020. Again, my doctor said he didn’t know what it was and that I should get a 2nd opinion. Then he left the room.

That’s when my therapist from TCO recommended that I see Dr. Owen O’Neill. Dr. O’Neill recommended arthroscopy. I had the procedure and now the pain, crunching, etc. is gone. I will never go to another practice. Dr. O’Neill, TCO and the entire staff have been a blessing. I wish that I could give them all a hug.

I highly recommend Dr. Owen O’Neill and his staff. In 2017 he replaced my right hip and this past June he replaced the left. Both surgeries were a complete success. Dr O’Neill, his staff and TCO made the whole process easy and convenient. I was nervous and worried about the surgeries, but they are so good and caring. They simply put you at ease. It’s wonderful to be able to walk without pain. I’m once again enjoying an active lifestyle. Kudos to you Dr. O’Neill!

I’m 58 and was experiencing the debilitating pain that comes with bone-on-bone anatomy in the right hip. I felt ancient beyond my years, hobbling around with one leg an inch shorter than the other. Dr. Owen O’Neill was highly recommended to me by my internist, and I liked the idea that he was skilled in the less-invasive anterior approach. He performed the surgery on June 5, 2020, and I am thrilled with the results! I instantly felt solid in my stance and very stable, and I was walking and climbing stairs the next day. Pain after surgery was easily managed with Tylenol. Two of my siblings who had hip replacement surgery via the posterior approach (with other surgeons) had more pain, longer scars, and longer recovery times. Sincere thanks to Dr. O’Neill, Mitch, and the entire TCO staff for restoring my mobility and giving me my life back. I’m buzzing around the neighborhood now with my dog and riding my exercise bike again. Feels fantastic! One more thing, the Care Suite overnight was fabulous. Comfy bed and recliner, top-notch nursing care and PT education. Covid-19 safety measures were excellent and reassuring. Way to go, TCO.

My experience with Dr. Owen O’Neill and his team was a very positive one! Dr. O’Neill made me feel so very comfortable. And I am SO thankful he got my surgery done on January 31, 2020 – or I would maybe still be waiting due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. I would absolutely recommend this surgery/treatment to anyone suffering with hip pain. I would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill to anyone/everyone to do this surgery. Improvements to my daily life are so great! I can walk now without any help – no walker or canes! I can walk up and down step with no problems and am back in my exercise classes! His staff were also great! Anne was so wonderful with her help with scheduling and answering our questions! And Mitch was so kind during my visits.

Dr. O’Neill is a fantastic surgeon. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone needing orthopedic care. He is extremely knowledgeable as well as compassionate and kind. I underwent a total knee replacement on 3/2/20 with much anxiety prior to surgery but after meeting with Dr. O’Neill and his team I felt so reassured and confident going forward. Dr. O’Neill was very attentive during my care suite stay and with my follow-up care. Dr. O’Neill was readily available with any questions I had during my home recovery. The EXCEL program is a wonderful program with great care from nurses, physical therapists and Dr O’Neill. I am SO SO glad I found Dr. O’Neill and went with the EXCEL program instead of the hospital route. PT staff were great and the RNs and coordinators kindly took care of my requests promptly. My recovery was great as well. At the end of week one my flexion was 110 degrees and 140 degrees by beginning of the 3rd week! I am now able to walk without pain! Dr. Owen O’Neill IS THE best surgeon. I can not recommend him highly enough! #1 Physician.

I am very happy with my experience with Dr. Owen O’Neill and his staff. On March 5th, 2020 I had a hip replacement surgery. Prior to the surgery I was in a lot of pain when I walked. I enjoy taking walks and being active. The surgery has changed my life. I am walking pain free. I had put off doing the surgery because I didn’t want to be out of work and have a long recovery. I was amazed how fast I was up and walking again. I am 57 and was born with hip deformation. I am so grateful for Dr. O’Neill for giving me my life back. My only regret is that I didn’t do this years ago.

I am a two-time patient of Dr. O’Neill. The left knee was replaced 11 years ago and is working great! The right knee was done in October 2019 and is also working great! As my right knee became more painful, there was no question in my mind as to who I would trust with the surgery and care, even though this means a 4 hour round-trip commute, as I live in the Brainerd Lakes area now. Dr. O’Neill and his first class staff’s counseling had me well prepared (for a process that has changed quite a bit in 11 years) for what I realized would be a more manageable recovery. I knew that prep and dutiful follow-up therapy would have me back to a much more normal life, as the surgery itself would be done by the best guy in the business! As far as knee replacements, do not wait until pain and discomfort change your life (for me, I can’t wait for spring and kayak fishing, which wasn’t an easy in-and-out last year). Know to be ready, trust Dr. O’Neill and his staff, and be ready to rehab.

THANK YOU DR. O’NEILL AND STAFF!

I had a total hip replacement done on October 28th, 2019, performed by Dr. Owen O’Neill and his wonderful staff. Dr. O’Neill performed an anterior procedure. I was back to work in two weeks and I never had to use a walker or crutches except for my first walk four hours after surgery. I used a cane for two weeks and after that time I used the cane occasionally, especially when walking outdoors. In 2003, I had my other hip replaced by another surgeon which was done with the posterior approach. My recovery was long and very painful with that one. I had to use a walker for two months and crutches for another month after that. I realize that in the 16 years in between my hip surgeries, replacement procedures have improved, but I believe Dr. O’Neill’s method is far superior. I highly recommend TCO, Dr. O’Neill and the whole staff. It was a far better experience than my first replacement.

I had not experienced a surgical procedure for 76 years, so I was somewhat apprehensive about having surgery at my age. While attending the hip replacement orientation, I was introduced to techniques that prepared me for the surgery ahead. My first meeting with Dr. O’Neill further relieved my anxiety, as he clearly explained the procedure mixed with a soft and gentle sense of assuring humor. My entry to the Southdale Medical Center and preparation for surgery was conducted by compassionate personnel who concentrated on my overall comfort. When I was wheeled into surgery, I was greeted by Dr. O’Neill and my next memory was waking up and being assured of a successful hip replacement. After a day and a half and a moderate walk, I was released from the hospital. My first week I relied on a walker, my second week on a cane, and the third week I began walking without assistance. During my early recovery, I experienced some minor discomfort but my total experience was relatively pain-free. I am content with my decision and especially grateful to Dr. O’Neill for his surgical skills and confident assurance together with all those who accommodated my every need. My previous hip pain that continually accompanied me while walking and sleeping is now gone and I am enjoying a pain-free life.

In 2019, both my husband and I were dealing with severe osteoarthritis hip pain. I researched orthopedic surgeons and feel that I found the very best! Dr. Owen O’Neill was able to get us both in for anterior total hip replacements. From the first meetings with Dr. O’Neill we had a positive experience! He explained the procedure thoroughly and made us feel confident about our decision. Dr. O’Neill, Mitch, Ann, the nurses and specialists, were professional and supportive. We were able to return to our daily routine and activities, especially walks which we couldn’t do before surgery, within 2-3 weeks! We are grateful for Dr. O’Neill’s skills and expertise and for the caring and support we received throughout our whole experience!

I am 55 years old and had hip surgery exactly 9 days ago. I cannot sing the praises enough regarding Dr. O’Neill and my experience with the EXCEL program in Eagan, MN. This entire experience from start to finish was excellent. The staff is knowledgeable, caring and efficient. Totally attuned to your needs. Post-surgery I was off narcotics after 3 days. After 9 days, I am able to walk with a cane with minimal pain. Still taking pain medicine but I feel great! I would highly recommend this procedure and the EXCEL program. I previously had my other hip replaced and stayed in a hospital and it was a nightmare. This entire experience has been awesome. I thank God for Dr. O’Neill and his entire staff. Thank you all.

I received a right hip replacement on 9/20/18. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and his support staff. Prior to surgery I could barely walk to my mailbox. Immediately after surgery, I walked with a cane for a short time and quickly returned to my activities. I even went downhill skiing 3 1/2 months later in CO. Other friends who had their hip replaced by the posterior method were in more pain and took a lot longer to recover. One year after surgery, I hiked 200 miles of the El Camino Pilgrimage in Northern Spain. And, did I mention I’m 77 years old?

I want to tell the world about the great experience I had with Dr. Owen O’Neill, Ann Sugrue (care coordinator), and all staff members for my hip replacement! These people are amazing, qualified professionals. They really do care and want to help provide the best service – great teamwork! I did a lot of research and talked to my friends that are in the nursing field to choose a surgeon and Dr. Owen O’Neill just kept coming up. I went to his  website and reviews and then set up my appointment. I am SO happy I did. The whole process is set up for success. They have prep/pre-surgery class that you attend with your coach so they know what the surgery is all about and how to assist you when you get home. It has a full booklet with steps and photos of the procedure and helpful checklists to make it simple. I had surgery in the morning, went across the street to the ortho care suite for overnight and then went home in less than 24 hours. They have the best system in place with the billing of your insurance carrier as all of your surgery is billed on one invoice. I referred 3 friends to Dr. O’Neill and will keep referring to him! Thanks so much Dr. O’Neill!!

My hip replacement went off without a hitch. I was up and walking the afternoon following surgery. Within two weeks I was walking a half mile a day. Within three weeks, 2 to 3 miles a day. Dr. O’Neill and his staff answered all my questions. The care staff at Fairview hospital was outstanding. My whole experience was very positive.

I couldn’t be happier with Dr. Owen O’Neill and his team. The whole experience has exceeded my expectations. Before my left hip started giving me trouble, I was very active at the club doing HIIT, barre and spinning classes, but I gradually had to stop. I wish I didn’t wait a year and a half before finally deciding to go through a total hip replacement. Dr. O’Neill was highly recommended by a friend, so I decided to go through with it. Since this would be my first surgery, I was very nervous about pain, having to depend on pain medications and physical therapy. I thought I would be laid up for a couple months or more. To my surprise, I had no pain at all and took only Tylenol for 10 days (no opioids). The only physical therapy needed was walk, walk, walk and a few leg exercises. I was able to walk around my cul-de-sac with a walker the second day home and I ditched the walker after 5 days. I’ve gradually increased my walking to 3 miles per day. All of my friends and family thought I was a “rock star,” they couldn’t believe how well I was doing in such a short time. Now after 8 weeks, I am able to get back to the club and resume all my normal activities. I have, and definitely will always, recommend Dr. O’Neill to anyone with hip, shoulder or knee issues.

I had a right hip replacement by Dr. Owen O’Neill in October 2018 when I was 77 years old. Prior to surgery I had a significant limp, could not stand longer than ten minutes because of pain and it was difficult for me to bend and put a shoe on my right foot. The surgery corrected all of these problems. I currently walk over one hour almost daily without pain, limping or other difficulties. Dr. O’Neill’s office staff, especially Ann Sugrue, were very helpful. She would immediately relay any question I had to Dr. O’Neill if he was not available. I have referred other people to Dr. O’Neill who also have had very successful hip replacements. He is a very skilled and compassionate surgeon who wants to help his patients lead a better and more productive life.

I had a great experience with Dr. O’Neill and his staff with having both of my hips replaced. I was in pain for years before I was able to work with Dr. O’Neill. He and all of his staff were excellent in working with me on getting prepared for the surgeries. Ann, his scheduler, was so thorough in making sure I had all necessary forms and procedures done both before and after surgery. She was so pleasant and professional to work with. His Physician Assistant, Jessie, was also very thorough and communicative in making sure I knew exactly what to expect both before and after the surgeries. She alleviated any worries I may have had. After surgery, I was surprised at how quickly I healed – I only needed pain medication for a few days and then had no need for any more. I had both hips replaced within a 5 month period. I am now back to living the life I had before – I can do all daily activities pain free! I was back to playing softball and tennis within 8 weeks of my second surgery. I am grateful to have my life back! I have already recommended people to both Dr. O’Neill and Twin Cities Orthopedics to have their hips done. Dr. O’Neill was recommended to me and he is the best! Thank you!!

Dr. O’Neill and his team performed my anterior approach hip replacement 9 weeks ago. From the first consult to the post-op follow-up, I have been totally impressed with the teams courtesy and professionalism. I consider my surgery to be a total success. Within hours of the surgery I was up and walking with minimal pain. I was able to discharge from the patient care suite the day after surgery using only a cane for support. Now, 9 weeks post-surgery, I have resumed many of the athletic activities my arthritic hip prevented me from doing prior to surgery. I now consider my new hip my “good hip”. I will not hesitate to return to Dr. O’Neill for any future surgery.

Last year I had a total replacement of my left knee with Dr. Owen O’Neill. I had my right knee totally replaced through TCO 10 years earlier and after some difficulty with that surgery, I was concerned about getting the second surgery. I went through TCO’s list of surgeons, looking for someone with a different approach to the procedure. I spoke with two different surgeons and settled on Dr. Owen O’Neill. He and his staff inspired confidence with their competence and thorough care description from start to finish. After a two-day hospital stay, I went home needing only over-the-counter meds and physical therapy assisting in my complete recovery. My only regret was waiting so many years to get relief. There was truly no comparison between my first surgery and my second. I would definitely encourage anyone considering a total knee replacement to consult with Dr. Owen O’Neill at TCO.

My hip replacement was an unqualified success! Thanks to Dr. Owen O’Neill and staff, I now have the joy and freedom of walking without pain and a walker. I was able to take steps immediately after surgery on June 27, 2019 and graduated from a walker to a cane in a week and continued to increase the time walked each day. The best parts are that I have taken extended trips by car and can sit in a theater or in a comfortable chair and enjoy reading or watching television without getting antsy from pain and stiffness. Dr. Owen O’Neill and staff are the real deal. They provide great pre and post-surgery education and follow-up. I’m 79 years old and look forward to more travel and continue being a good grandpa to my three granddaughters and an active husband and a father.

I am 80 years old and had total left knee replacement in June 2019. My knee was knock-kneed but Dr. O’Neill worked extra hard and got it perfectly straight. I was walking on it the same day of surgery. Home the next day and riding a stationary bike 4 days later. Within two weeks, no walker or cane. I never had any pain. Dr. O’Neill is a fantastic surgeon. He and his team care for their patients. They take all the time needed to listen to your concerns, answer questions and explain everything in detail. He is not only a top surgeon but a great person. I have the highest praise and respect for Dr. O’Neill and his team and highly recommend them if you need knee surgery.

TCO did a great job, Dr. O’Neill is wonderful. He did my left hip. I previously had my right hip done by a different doctor and hospital. On my previous operation they used a different technique that had more discomfort and a longer recovery time. Dr. O’Neill used a less invasive surgical technique and my recovery was much quicker with less discomfort.

At 72 years of age, I visited Dr. O’Neill for pain and stiffness in my right hip as well as back pain from my right leg being 1/2” shorter than the left one. The pain and lack of mobility was finally infringing on my everyday life. Hip replacement was inevitable. On February 7th, 2019, I had anterior hip replacement surgery. Dr. O’Neill also lengthened the right leg by 1/2” making legs and pelvis even.

After 13 days, my husband and I flew to Arizona where I continued the rebuilding instructions I was given by Dr. O’Neill’s team. Six weeks after surgery, I was able to resume biking, hiking, working out, playing pickleball, without pain. In the attached picture, 16 weeks after surgery, my husband and I went on a 10 day bike tour through the Dordogne region of France.

Hip replacement surgery has made such a positive difference in everyday life as well as all the physical activities I love doing. I didn’t realize how much I was compensating for the pain in my right hip and overworking the left side of my body. After surgery, my back and sacrum pain was gone. Riding the hills in France was so enjoyable and I was much stronger and more confident in my biking. What a blessing!!

Thank you to Dr. O’Neill and the team. I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr. O’Neill and the minimally invasive hip replacement surgery. I wish I would’ve done it sooner.

I don’t know where to begin to thank Dr. O’Neill and his staff for helping me over the past few years. Joint by joint they helped me improve my mobility! Having to have both my hips and both knees replaced was no easy journey, but they were there with me every step of the way! They answered many questions for me, and always made me feel important. I am forever grateful! They are the BEST.

On February 28, 2019 Dr. Owen O’Neill and Jessie Donovan replaced my right knee. The surgery was successful and I was released from the hospital the next day. Dr. O’Neill suggested that I go directly home with someone to assist me for a few days. I was able to begin physical therapy on March 4 at the TCO facility in Edina. I saw Jessie Donovan on March 19 for a progress check, completed the physical therapy on April 23 and saw Dr. O’Neill on April 30 for the final progress check. Two months is a speedy recovery for an 80 year old woman; I can’t emphasize enough an exercise program prior to surgery.

The entire staff at TCO, for surgery and physical therapy, is outstanding and I’d recommend them. They are professional and helpful in every way, answered all my questions and encouraged me through the entire process. I have returned to all the activities that were difficult for me prior to the surgery.

I am recommending Dr. Owen O’Neill and his team with TCO to EVERYONE, because, simply put, they are EXCELLENT and THEY TRULY CARE. I had struggled with my hip conditions since birth on and off and at “end stage” received recommendations from Mayo to seek out Dr. O’Neill. Dr. O’Neill made room in his busy schedule immediately and once he saw me, scheduled surgery services ASAP. I will forever be grateful, especially since at this point, I could barely walk and was in constant pain. Not only was I greeted with great compassion, respect and professionalism by Dr. O’Neill, but also by his entire team. Everyone worked hand in hand very smoothly and I was thoroughly prepared for surgery and truly had the best experience and outcome. Every aspect of care was covered under the EXCEL program, including education, post-surgery care and a simplified convenient billing package. Every detail, every need was anticipated and I was well set up for success. Dr. O’Neill and his staff ALL are very approachable and made themselves available for support 24/7. Truly, I now have a NEW LIFE, new energy, a smile on my face, and NO MORE PAIN. I know there is a good chance that I will have to receive surgery on my other hip at some time in the future. In that case, for certain, I have already chosen Dr. O’Neill and his team for the job. I could not have asked for a better team, service, and outcome and forever will feel grateful and blessed.

I had my left total knee replacement, July 19, 2018 and it went really well. Therapy was really effective. I had my right total knee replacement on October 18, 2018 and it went really well too. Therapy was good too. Dr. Owen O’Neill and assistant Jessie are super helpful. I am now ready to have surgery on my spine, since my knees are doing so well. April 2019. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH TCO.

As an active 69 year old grandmother with several years of gradually worsening osteoarthritic hip pain, I had tried every suggestion from PT to cortisone injections to deep muscle massage, with little relief. I was finally advised to look into a total hip replacement. I didn’t know where to start with my research for best practices, but luckily for me, a family friend had recently used and highly recommended Dr. Owen O’Neill for a minimally invasive, anterior approach hip replacement. What a find! From my first appointment, I knew I was in the right place. Between Ann, Jessie and the rest of the TCO staff, I felt in good hands. The Fairview Southdale joint class was most helpful; as were the pre-surgery recommended exercises. In spite of my husband and my fears, we forged ahead with surgery and happily, had a perfect outcome. My legs are the same length again!! Hurrah! I was up walking at Fairview within hours of surgery and discharged the next afternoon after a few in-house PT sessions to demonstrate I could manage stairs. At home that first day, I climbed our second-level stairs slowly but surely. I used a walker for 5 days; graduated to a cane for another 5 days, after a few more days, kept losing the cane in our house! By the end of week two, I was mostly off pain meds except for two Tylenol at night. I was sleeping better than I had in a couple years. No hip pain!! My three week post-op visit; I walked in unassisted without a limp; my 2 month visit…I was good to go; no restrictions! No pain…a little outer hip numbness and slight swelling with activity (ice alleviates) but no pain. Already traveling/flying again; walking without hip pain is a such a blessing! Thanks again to Dr. Owen O’Neill for his professional, kind, personable bedside manner. And to his staff, who were there whenever I needed them, thank you!! As everyone said in the beginning, “You’ll wonder why you didn’t do this sooner.” Exactly!!! Thanks so much.

There was a time it required very little effort to step into the stirrup and throw a leg up over the saddle; or swing that same leg over a bicycle seat and pedal happily along a beckoning bike trail. The joy of dragging my kayak to the rivers’s edge and climbing in became sadly, and gradually, less joyful and sometimes, almost embarrassing. Eventually, I even needed help tying my shoes. And most importantly, keeping up with our eight grand kids was requiring more and more energy because of my chronic joint pain. I was definitely off my game. At 69, I was trying hard to continue leading the active life I’d always aspired to, but my left hip was giving me fits. After two years of chronic worsening pain, I was slowly but surely losing strength, range of motion and mobility. After various injections, exercises, potions, and other remedies failed to help, an MRI at last revealed the diagnosis: end stage arthritis. “The bad news,” said the doctor, “You’re a candidate for a hip replacement.” But,” she said, “the good news is, we can fix this.” I was thankful for that. I really was. But deep down, I was also very sad, a little angry and frankly, terrified.
I should have just been grateful. I was grateful; we could fix this. But still, there was a feeling of loss. I cried. Somehow, it felt I’d failed. Perhaps I’d not done enough to stay healthy and fit, or maybe I’d done too much and just plain wore out my joint. Maybe it was my fault! The empathetic doctor (she even hugged me) reassured me that it was probably a combination of good-old genetics and a lifetime of wear and tear. And so, armed with her words echoing in my head, the names of a couple good surgeons in my pocket, and knowing very little about the surgery itself, I began my hip replacement journey.

It is often said that life happens while you’re making other plans. In my case, in the midst of consulting other surgeons, and reading about best practices in hip replacements (do not watch videos of these procedures), a family friend called with a recommendation. He’d recently had a successful total hip replacement with TCO’s Dr. Owen O’Neill. Ric almost insisted that I try and get an appointment. He couldn’t say enough good things about the procedure (anterior minimally invasive) or the surgeon. The recovery, he told me, felt miraculous. That alone gave me hope and courage. Luckily, with lots of deep breaths, crossed fingers, and prayers, I was able to secure an appointment fairly quickly with Dr. O’Neill and then, finally, an actual date for surgery. And with that date circled in red, my own comeback story officially commenced.

My TCO Champion, the one(s) responsible for me regaining my active life is, without a doubt, Dr. Owen O’Neill and his caring, competent staff. Never have I felt in such good hands. From our first meeting, to all the preparations made as my surgical date neared, Dr. O’Neill and his staff made me feel I was their priority. Other champions who assisted in my healing included my husband of 49 years. Stan was a steadfast cheerleader and a loving, competent caregiver. This posse of mine, my family, my friends, and my care providers, set me on a course to recovery. I dove in with both feet, deciding to cross every “t,” and dot every “i” to facilitate my healing. I listened carefully to my fellow “hipster” friend, Ric, who even lent me his walker and cane. I did things he suggested that had helped him…pre-exercises to strengthen, changes at home for safer furniture arrangement, even meal prep ideas for after surgery. Ric followed up every week with me, before and after surgery, encouraging, reminding, reinforcing. “How’s the pain?” “Ice will help the swelling.” “Don’t forget to walk a little every hour!” He was indeed my hip-mentor; promoting, advocating, cheering me on. Another wise friend, before surgery, composed daily affirmations to paste on my bathroom mirror. “I see healing colors flowing through and around my body/hip.” “I am calm and relaxed.” “I give love to all those I meet on this adventure.” After a month of repeating and reinforcing these thoughts, I found myself more positive and confident that all would be well. I went into surgery emboldened with confidence, propped up by love.

More than one person before my surgery said, “The most frequent thing I hear from folks who’ve had a hip replacement is, ‘Why did I wait so long?” Coming home 36 hours after my own surgery, ambulating with a walker, climbing stairs to our second story master, (with Stan as my spotter) I was already saying the same. It was amazing; the bone-on-bone pain was gone! Within 5 days, I put the walker away and used a cane. After a few more days, I kept forgetting to use the cane. At my three week post-op appointment, I walked in without assistance and was well on my way to a complete recovery. Two months out, Dr. O’Neill declared me “Good to go; no restrictions.” Today, 3 months out, another affirmation, “I have an attitude of gratitude for my new hip and the amazing difference it has made in my life” has come true! Although I haven’t yet had the chance to swing my leg over a saddle or drag my kayak to the river’s edge, I am already taking extended walks, climbing bleachers to cheer at grand kids’ sporting events, traveling and planning more adventures with the caregiver-love-of-my-life, Stan. I’ve even danced in the kitchen in my new kitten heels! We’re headed to Italy soon, where I’ll lace up my own hiking boots, walk the cobblestones of Florence, climb aboard a gondola in Venice, and sample Tuscany wines. So yes, I plan to maximize this gift I’ve been given, this medical miracle, this comeback.

“My hip surgery was a complete success in every way.”
“My surgeon and nurses performed at their very best.”
“I choose to be healthy and happy today.”

I’m already trying to pay this blessing forward, sharing my story with others who are finding themselves in similar situations. And indeed, I’m back, and well on my way to a continued active life, filled with joy for my new hip, and very, very grateful.

Dr. Owen O’Neill is one of the best! I highly recommend him and his staff. The whole experience was as good as it gets for having a major surgery. Although uncommon in the medical industry these days, Dr. O’Neill has excellent bedside manner and does a great job actually listening to the patient. He takes the time to educate you on the procedure and the materials that will be used, and to address concerns you may have. He is an excellent surgeon and he did an amazing job on my anterior hip replacement.

I had lived with bone on bone pain for nearly 3 years before having surgery. I did lots of physical therapy and was able to greatly reduce the pain I was experiencing. However I was still greatly restricted in my activities, movement, and flexibility. I could barely reach my shoes to tie them. I thought my pain level was tolerable, but after having the surgery and having no pain for months now, I realize the pain was really dragging down many aspects of my life, my energy level, and my general demeanor. It’s been 8 months now and I’m feeling 10 years younger. I’m able to walk normally, jog and run, do all my gardening, and am very active again. The surgery really did change my life.

Thanks again to Dr. O’Neill and to his entire team. They are amazing!

I am really happy with both my knee replacements. The first one in July 2018 and the second in October 2018. One night stay in Fairview Southdale Hospital, and home for recovery. Started physical therapy 4 days later at TCO Edina. Terrific therapists. Everyone were exceptionally friendly and helpful. I totally recommend TCO, Dr. Owen O’Neill and Jessie Donovan.

After research, I made an appointment with Dr. Owen O’Neill for a consult regarding a knee replacement. After my first visit, I knew he was the one I wanted to perform the surgery. He took the time to go over and explain the x-rays; he used the model of the knee to explain the procedure and even though he had a long waiting list, we scheduled the surgery and I am glad I did. The whole process through TCO was excellent. From the staff at the Crosstown Surgery Center in Edina, to the follow up care at Aurora, to Dr. O’Neill’s care coordinator, Ann. They made sure I was aware of everything before and after my surgery and were there to answer any questions I had about the process and my recovery. I highly recommend Dr. Owen O’Neill and will use him again for any future orthopedic needs.

I went to my family doctor with a lot of pain in my right hip. He right away referred me to Twin Cities Orthopedics and Dr. Owen O’Neill. He said that if his mother had a bad hip, this was the doctor he wanted her to see. Dr. O’Neill took x-rays and examined me and said the hip would only get worse in time and that I should let him replace it. As it was, I could no longer golf or drive without using my hand under my right knee to lift my foot from the gas pedal to the break and vice versa. I couldn’t do stairs!

Still, I put off surgery for a while and when I could no longer stand the pain, I put aside my fears of surviving surgery (at my age of 77) and asked him to help me. He replaced my hip and after 2 days I was home on a walker. 10 days later walking around my house with a cane and then on my next visit, I was walking on my own just like my old self. NO CANE and NO LIMP. J Soon playing golf with my friends and teenage grandchildren.

I just had my 5 year re-check and am doing fine. I will see Dr. O’Neill in another 5 years. Oh yeah, I have a very small almost invisible scar on the front of my right thigh at hip level. We are blessed to have Twin Cities Orthopedics here in our area and of course Dr. Owen O’Neill.

Sincerely and gratefully,

Constance S.

I endured painful exercises for nearly two years as my physical therapist attempted various approaches to relieve my pain. I was shocked when my therapist informed me that I needed hip replacement surgery. I spent hours researching hip replacement surgery and was interested in the Anterior Approach. Testimonials for Dr. Owen O’Neill on TCO’s website impressed me, and I scheduled an appointment with him.

Dr. O’Neill reviewed my x-rays showing deterioration of the left hip cartilage resulting in bone-on-bone. He thoroughly explained the Anterior Approach Hip Replacement, and I scheduled surgery. The mandatory class at Fairview Southdale was helpful, and the pre-surgery exercises were beneficial.

The entire experience has been amazing. A few hours after surgery, I used my walker for a short walk to the nurses station. I then asked my nurse if we could walk further as I was thoroughly enjoying this without any pain. I went home the next day with no therapy, other than walking, and no restrictions, other than dancing the “Twist”.

While at home, I only used my walker for three days. I then discarded my cane after tripping on it during the first two minutes of usage. I proceeded to carefully walk around the house without assistance. I had pain medication – 1/2 tablet twice daily – for maybe 10 days. I didn’t even need Tylenol after that.

Life is good! At 77 years of age, I continue my daily 40 minutes of treadmill in addition to unlimited activities keeping me more than busy! I only experience a small amount of swelling after the treadmill, but no stiffness or pain. A special “Thanks” to Dr. Owen O’Neill and his amazing staff, Jessie and Ann. The front desk has also been exceptionally friendly and efficient. Yes, I anticipate future pain in my other hip and a repeat of this amazing procedure.

A couple of years ago, at age 71, I started having some discomfort in my hip. During my annual physical, asked my family physician to take an x-ray. It showed some arthritis developing, but not significant. Decided then to undergo physical therapy and I religiously performed the exercises prescribed, but with little to no benefit. Slowed down on walking frequency and speed and stopped playing pickleball.

The following spring, I saw Dr. Owen O’Neill who gave me an injection into my hip and I felt almost immediate relief. Went back to walking and playing pickleball, but again experienced discomfort within a couple of months. I opted for Dr. O’Neill because he had performed surgery on my wife’s knees and I had seen him previously for other joint issues, that didn’t require surgery.

Then I went back to Dr. O’Neill earlier this year thinking that I needed a second injection. Additional x-rays and an MRI, along with only a three month beneficial response to the first injection indicated I should consider a hip replacement, much to my chagrin. My choice seemed to be to either live with the discomfort until it became unbearable or proceed with the operation as soon as possible while still in good health. I opted to proceed with the operation now.

Dr. O’Neill and his staff were outstanding throughout the process. They met with me numerous times to answer questions and explain what would happen during and after surgery. I also attended a 3 hour joint replacement class at Fairview Southdale Hospital in advance of surgery and then followed their advance exercise instructions.

My surgery and recovery were uneventful – just the way I had hoped. I walked within a few hours of surgery and was discharged the following day. There was discomfort, as you might expect after surgery, but I actually noticed improvement each day. I used a walker the first few days and shifted to a cane within a week. I discontinued the cane within a month following the surgery. Six weeks after surgery I was walking a three mile route a couple of times a week. Two months after surgery, I started some strengthening exercises and have continued walking. An added benefit seems to be the disappearance of some back pain I had been enduring before surgery.

Dr O’Neill performs hip surgeries employing an anterior approach, eliminating the need to damage muscles and significantly improving the speed of recovery. I would highly recommend anyone thinking they may need hip surgery to see Dr. O’Neill for an evaluation and potential hip replacement.

Dr. Owen O’Neill:

I had my left knee replace on October 19, 2016. Recovery of the strength in the knee went according to the expected timetable of the therapy group at Twin Cities Orthopedics except for stretching the hamstring and calf muscles.

Because I had played tennis with pain and a bent knee for 15 years, the muscles wouldn’t stretch out to less than 6 degrees. You then recommended a Dynaflex brace to wear 6 hours a day (3 in the morning and 3 in the evening) for 7 weeks. With tightening this this brace each week, it said that improvement would be 1 degree per week.  After 7 weeks, my left knee was at -1 degree.

I stretch and exercise every day and it has helped improve my tennis game. Before my operation, I played doubles with a group of 12 people.  I was about in the middle of the pack playing with pain and couldn’t run.

With my new knee, my game has improved to where I am now at the top of the pack by about 20%. I can outrun most in my group and have full flexibility. I wish I would have done this 15 years ago.

Thanks for your operational expertise.

I am a very active 69 year old that had been struggling with a bum left knee for 3 or 4 years. I play senior softball and bowl. Another doc told me I needed a full knee replacement 3 years ago. Dr. Owen O’Neill indicated the inside of my knee was gone but the outside was in good shape so he suggested a partial knee replacement. I really liked the idea of only replacing the bad parts and leaving the good parts in place. I got the feeling that it might take a bit more artistry and time to fit a partial replacement in, thus, some surgeons might avoid them. He gave me my partial knee replacement on Jan 3, 2018 and I started bowling and playing softball in March. I am going to participate in the senior world softball tournament in Vegas next week AND I bowled my first perfect 300 game on my new sturdy knee 2 days ago. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill.

The moment I met Dr. O’Neill, I knew I was going to select him to be my hip(s) surgeon. He takes his time in reviewing X-rays with patients as well as covering all aspects of the procedure. I needed both hips replaced and the surgeries needed to be at least 4 weeks apart. So that is what I did.

I would like to thank Dr. O’Neill, Jessie and the entire O’Neill team for a truly wonderful experience. Here I am back at one of my favorite activities 3 months after the second surgery – wake surfing! Thank you!

Several members of my church had hip replacement by Dr. O’Neill and all recommended him. So when my pain became bad and I no longer put on my socks, I talked to Dr. O’Neill. He is very receptive to my questions, listened to me and gave thorough answers. Jessie, his assistant, also had time to sit and talk with me. My entire experience with the staff was very positive.

I could be the poster “child.” My pain before my hip replacement was 9 on a 10-point scale. I was using a walker and could barely do daily tasks. Could find no pain relief. Dr. Owen O’Neill was able to fit me in sooner than normal. Everything about the protocol, the team, the pre-surgery instructions, the precautions to prevent infection or blood clots, the educational session and the strengthening exercises were extremely helpful. In the recovery room and back in the hospital room, my pain was at a 1 or 2—insignificant compared to before surgery. No opioids. I walked at the arboretum 6 days later (with walker), quit the walker after 11 days. Life is great. Although I’m not supposed to run long distance, I’m back at yoga and walking up to 4 miles daily. I would and have recommended Dr. O’Neill to others.

I had surgery on my right hip which was bone on bone and waited a little too long. For two years my wife and I planned a bucket list trip to Africa. If it wasn’t for Dr. Owen O’Neill and his group, I would never of been able to make the trip. Ten weeks after surgery I was able to fly, ride comfortably and enjoy a trip of a lifetime. Thank you.

Dr. Owen O’Neill did both of my hips, about 2 years apart. The results were amazing. I was out of the hospital within 24 hours. I used no prescription pain pills and no pills at all after 1 week. I am 79 and was walking normally after 3 weeks and running (singles tennis) after 2 months. There was no therapy besides walking.

Dr. Owen O’Neill performed a rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder. Fabulous! I was back to my work the next day and playing bass that weekend! Almost back to normal after 3 and a half months. Thank you so much Dr. O’Neill, your staff, and all the personnel in both of your Twin Cities Orthopedics and the Two Twelve Medical Center. I so appreciate it. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and the rest of the staff at Twin Cities Orthopedics!

Dr. Owen O’Neill has performed two knee replacement surgeries for me. The first one was in August 2015 and the other was February 2018. He did an incredible job on both of them and I am very happy that the results have been so successful. He always explained everything clearly and was always open to questions. I have recommended him to friends that are considering replacement surgery. His team was very supportive through the process and I am more than grateful to him and TCO!!

Dr. Owen O’Neill is without question an outstanding surgeon!!! My hip surgery from late 2017 is perfect. He diagnosed the issue with my right knee immediately and gave me three paths of treatment. If you have any waist-down issues – there is no expert better than Dr. O’Neill.

Almost ten years ago Dr. O’Neill replaced my right knee. It had been damaged in an auto accident several years earlier and caused me considerable pain and an awkward gait. I was and I am still very happy with that new knee. No pain and no limp! When my left knee needed to be replaced I did not hesitate to see Dr. O’Neill. I had the surgery in January and participated in the EXCEL program. The recovery was swift and the care was excellent. I appreciated the personable and professional and care I received, not only from Dr. O’Neill, but also from his office and clinical staff. They provided great information, listened to my questions, addressed my concerns and seemed happy to do it. Now that spring is finally here, I am delighted to be out walking the neighborhood!

I had my right hip replaced just over 3 years ago before moving to MN using the posterior approach. My doctor was great (a friend of the family) and my surgery was successful. I walked away completely satisfied and knowing I had received the “white glove” treatment. So when my left hip started acting up, I strongly suspected we were heading down the same path.

Dr. O’Neill and team confirmed that my cartilage had left the building and I prepared for the ordeal all over again. Going on disability and 6 – 8 weeks of down time needing assistance etc. Then Dr. O’Neill carefully explained that a new anterior approach procedure is performed by the team and with results that left me doubting what I was hearing in spite of the logic behind it. Back to work in a couple of weeks (no disability), being able to start swimming and other activities (especially walking) almost immediately, and likely no physical therapy needed. Then I was told about the EXCEL program and how this group has put together a team and a plan that covers every possible detail of the prep, surgery, and post-op care. I knew that I was in good hands because every concern that I had based on the first hip being done was clearly being addressed. Most of all, my previous Doctor said just be sure the new procedure is being done by someone who has a good deal of experience with it. Dr. O’Neill fits that having successfully performed the procedure many times after spending a great deal of time researching and training. His expertise is on display daily.

I am 4 months and some change out from surgery and I need to say that the difference in recovery this time is amazing. There are fewer restrictions in general. I was walking the day of and have not stopped since. Back in the pool as soon as the wound had healed and swimming easily. I began working from home ten days post-op which really was amazing compared to the earlier procedure (6 weeks before working from home). I had no need for pain medication after the third day post-op stronger than Celebrex (as a person in recovery, this was almost more of a concern than the procedure). I was given the ok to drive as soon as I stopped pain medication but waited 2 weeks to ease the concern of family. Everything I had been told prior to surgery was spot on and or even better than described.

I need to say a few words about the team at TCO. They not only are caring and supportive throughout the process but anticipate just about every question, concern and need in advance. Everyone goes above and beyond to answer questions from insurance to logistics and everything in between. The day of surgery team was caring, professional and on top of things. The overnight nursing care is nothing short of extraordinary and the next day/discharge team left nothing unanswered. The folks at follow up visits from the front desk to the team assisting Dr. O’Neill are fantastic. If you are considering options for a hip replacement, I cannot encourage you enough to look into this team and the work that they are doing. I am so grateful to have been a patient.

My experience with Dr. O’Neill and his team was EXCELLENT. From start to finish, the entire hip replacement procedure far exceeded my expectations. For anyone who is experiencing hip pain and discomfort or has started limping, I strongly recommend starting with an X-ray. If the X-ray shows significant deterioration of your cartilage at the hip joint I strongly recommend setting up a consultation with Dr. O’Neill. I was particularly happy to find that Dr. O’Neill performs the innovative anterior procedure which avoids cutting the major muscles in the hip area (such as the glutes) which allows for a much faster recovery. I had the procedure done in early January of 2018 and within a few days I was walking for over an hour per day. After a couple weeks I was also able to incorporate a lot of stair climbing each day (I am lucky to live in a high rise!) In early April I traveled to Peru and walked a great deal (and climbed some monuments) during my 33 day vacation. My FitBit told me I climbed the equivalent of more than two EMPIRE STATE BUILDINGS (223 floors) and walked almost 20,000 steps (8.5 miles) when I toured Machu Pichu (shown in the attached photo). Sports has always been an important part of my life, and I am thrilled to be able to do almost everything I did before my encounter with osteoarthritis.

Dr. Owen O’Neill performed my minimally invasive anterior approach hip replacement on 1/23/2018. I’m 70 years old with an added complication of having had polio as a baby from which I made an excellent recovery. I suspected new post polio problems when pain & weakness began curbing my mobility. I had no idea they were also symptoms of my needing hip replacement. Eventually, even walking through the house had become too painful. In desperation, I made an appointment with an orthopedist who diagnosed me with needing a hip replacement. I began researching orthopedic surgeons on the internet for a 2nd opinion and ran across Dr. Owen O’Neill. His impressive credentials and experience, along with the patient testimonials on his website were all very impressive. Upon meeting and talking with Dr. O’Neill, I knew he was the highly skilled, kind and caring surgeon I wanted. My hip replacement was a complete success! Dr. O’Neill, along with Jessie, his physician assistant, took excellent care of me. Following surgery, my previous hip pain was gone. The operative pain was tolerable and definitely less than the pain I lived with before surgery. I was encouraged and happy with the progress I quickly made. I’m back to my previous activities and enjoying life. My only regret was waiting rather than finding Dr. O’Neill a few years ago. He truly gave me back my life! Many, many thank you’s, Dr. O’Neill!

My hip issue developed rather suddenly. I fell from standing twice and then could bear little weight on my left side. The first MD I saw suggested that I buy a car with a higher seat. My physician referred me to an orthopedist and scheduled an MRI which showed non-displaced fractures, tearing and necrosis. Surgery was necessary. I read about my options. When asked specifically about the minimally invasive technique, the first orthopedist said that I was “too fat”. I asked for a second opinion and was scheduled to meet Dr. Owen O’Neill who stated that he now prefers to perform minimally invasive procedures because of a patient’s improved recovery time. Dr. O’Neill patiently addressed all of my questions and concerns and I was scheduled for surgery in a hospital. I had had my wisdom teeth extracted decades before, but was otherwise inexperienced in the surgical arena. Dr. O’Neill was very reassuring and I felt confident in his care. I was up and walking later that day and took a midnight hike with my nurse. I was discharged the following day, encountered no subsequent problems and recovered smoothly over the next three months. I’ve been available to shovel snow much too late in the season and have returned to Curves. I need to excuse myself now to dust off my golf clubs and put air in my bike tires. I would recommend Dr. O’Neill, his PA Jesse Donovan and Ann, the power behind the telephone, without reservation.

I am so glad I found Dr. O’Neill. I had known for a while that I needed knee replacement surgery and had been searching for the right doctor who would take good care of me. The first visit, I could tell by his positive energy and enthusiasm that he is the doctor for me. Not only is Dr. O’Neill progressive in his practice, but he is also kind and caring.

I was very active, enjoying zumba until my hip bothered me when I walked. I had to quit about 4 years ago, and then I found out I had advanced hip arthritis, due to an injury 20 years previously. At the end of last year, when my hip began to hurt with each step, I knew I had to do something. However, I didn’t want traditional hip surgery, with all the pain and recovery time. My sister knew of an avid tennis player who’d had minimally invasive anterior hip surgery and had recovered very quickly. I then found out a co-worker was scheduled for the same surgery so found out who was doing it. I made an appointment with the same surgeon, Dr. O’Neill, and scheduled surgery for the next month. The whole process was amazing; the entire team was so caring and attentive, and I felt very well cared for and comfortable. Recovery was very fast, and I can now walk and ride my bike with no pain. No pain makes living so much better!

I had my first hip replacement in 2002. Before that surgery, my left leg was about 1/2 inch longer than my right. I asked that surgeon if he could even them out during the hip replacement. Not only did he NOT even them out, after surgery it was an inch longer as measured in 2012 at the Mayo clinic. This put more stress on my right hip and knee so that by September, 2017, I couldn’t walk without a cane. My primary physician sent me for a cortisone shot and referred me to Dr. O’Neill, who had done my primary’s hip replacement.

I was examined by Dr. O’Neill in January, 2018 who told me my only viable option was a hip replacement, describing a different surgical attack, through the front of my thigh, rather than the back of the thigh, as was done with my left hip. I had right hip replacement surgery on February 1. When I awoke and was asked to use a walker, I noticed that my legs were the same length for the first time since what seemed like forever. I walked without pain, was off any assistance or pain medication in 8 days (as opposed to 6 weeks on crutches with my left hip replacement). I felt (and feel) like a new man!

I have followed the Home Exercise Program and returned to the Y for treadmill and other exercises. I feel great!

Just like my primary physician, I heartily recommend Dr. Owen O’Neill for a consultation on hip pain. He is straight forward, lists options, and if surgery is necessary, he is great!

Dr. Owen O’Neill performed an anterior approach hip replacement on January 4th, 2018 because I was bone on bone and not able to live the kind of life I want. The surgery went so well that I left the hospital approximately 24 hours after surgery. Following the post-operative instructions, I rehabbed at home and was driving two weeks after surgery. Six weeks after surgery I felt great. The reason I went to Dr. O’Neill was he also did a knee replacement 7 or 8 years earlier. My knee was also bone on bone and really restricted my lifestyle. The pain was getting unbearable. I remember setting up for a putt while golfing and literally having my hands tremble because of the pain. My rehab for the knee was considerably harder than the hip but absolutely worth it. I went from hardly being able to walk or even drive a car, to getting back to doing anything I want to do. Golfing, fishing, hunting including using climbing tree stands! Anything I want to do! I am very thankful for Dr. O’Neill and his team, Jessie Donovan and Ann Sugrue! They have my gratitude and trust!

I am Eric, I had bone on bone for approximately 3 years. I was scared! Dr. O’Neill is my doctor. My operation was performed at 4:30 pm and the next morning, the physical therapists said it was time to walk. I couldn’t believe it, but when I walked, it was like “perfect”….like the surgery never happened. Early in the afternoon, I decided to go for a walk by myself. Behind me, out of another door, Dr. O’Neill and another fellow doctor came out. He barked at me and I yelled, “It’s Dr. O.!” and the other doctor laughed. I said, “I can’t believe it! It’s like it never happened and Owen – you are my hero!!!” Dr. O’Neill released me two hours later. He performed on my other hip three years later. I strongly think you should know my story when deciding on an orthopedic surgeon! I have asked him to give me a 6-month notice before he retires. I was very lucky to have picked him!

I am a 65 year old active man whose left hip was bone on bone. I ran into a recent patient of Dr. Owen O’Neill at my granddaughters softball game. He introduced to me the anterior approach hip replacement that had been performed on him by Dr. O’Neill. He gave very high reviews of the procedure, Dr. O’Neill and his entire staff. So I proceeded to contact TCO to schedule a consultation. After meeting Dr. O’Neill, there was no question in my mind that he was confident and reassuring that his pleasure is getting me back to 100%. Let me assure you that what he said, he does. Absolutely no regrets. His total staff is top notch. I would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and his fabulous PA, Jessie Donovan. It is with great relief to be able to walk without pain.

In December of 2016, Dr. Owen O’Neill performed an anterior hip replacement for me and I couldn’t have asked for a better result. I was walking without any assistance upon discharge and was methodically able to clear a light dusting of snow the next day (I like a clean sidewalk). After one week I was able to walk up to 3 miles. After two weeks I was able to do 5 miles. Of course, there was the usual inflammation & soreness that I felt at the end of each day because of the healing process but it’s just walking. I was able to go further each day without a problem. After 10 weeks, I hiked down from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to Phantom Ranch and back out the next day. I highly recommend this trip and am looking forward to doing it again someday. A friend of mine had the same surgery as I did this year and she has had the same success that I have. I highly recommend the anterior approach because you’ll be back on your feet immediately.

Thanks again to Owen O’Neill, Jessie Donovan, and the rest of his team!

It is really hard explain just how talented Dr. Owen O’Neill and his staff are. I had been in pain for a long time before surgery. The surgery was a life saver because there wasn’t much that I could do anymore. Within a week post-surgery, I already had less pain that before surgery and after 3 weeks, I was walking without pain. At six weeks, I was back in the gym riding the bike, walking on the treadmill, and using the elliptical machine. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill to anyone experiencing hip problems. He will get you on the right path to recovery.

Amazing! Unbelievable! It is hard to find the words to describe my positive experience with Dr. O’Neill and my anterior hip replacement. For a few years, I called it a pulled muscle (and a few other things) until an x-ray revealed that it was my hip causing all the pain. I met with two hip surgeons, but was not willing to face a 4-8 week recovery as had many of my friends. My wife suggested that I talk with our neighbor Karen who, a few years ago, had this procedure done by Dr. O’Neill. After one conversation with her, I was convinced. Even though he was running late that day, my consultation with him was one of the most personal visits I have ever had with a physician. Within two months, I had the surgery. I spent one night in the hospital, went home to recover, and used 2 out of 50 pain pills. Day one, I used a walker. Day two, I used a cane. Day three, I was walking without assistance. Day eight, I was driving. Day nine, I was back to work. Amazing? Unbelievable? What word would you use? Thank you, Dr. O’Neill, and your “amazing” team. I feel blessed that my wife connected me to Karen as I now hope to bless and to connect many more people to you.

I received a total hip replacement from Dr. Owen O’Neill. I put off doing the surgery for over a year and researched the procedure, both online and through meeting with other surgeons. At my first appointment with Dr. O’Neill, I set up my appointment to receive the surgery. He was informative, reassuring and very personable; I had no reservations on proceeding. The pre-operative process, the surgery and the post-operative process went perfectly—I went home the day after surgery. It was wonderful to no longer have pain going up and down the stairs, getting in and out of the car and going for walks again. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill; if you are reading this, you need look no further—you have found the best!

After three years or so with a bad hip, I was referred to TCO and Dr. O’Neill. He and his team are exceptional. Options are presented in a factual, yet very personal manner, but at the end of the day, you, as the patient/client must decide what option to choose. This is the most honest, ethical and professional consultation I have ever experienced. The minimally-invasive surgery on my hip performed by Dr. O’Neill was pain-free from surgery through my 6-weeks post-op appointment. Dr. O’Neill and his team of Ann, Jessie, Isabel and Kayla are exceptional from first appointment to complete follow up.

The summer of 2017 I did yard work and gardening with unbelievable pain. I was a very miserable 76 year old woman. On October 3rd, Dr. Owen O’Neill and Jessie performed minimal anterior hip replacement surgery. The next day I left the hospital and walked into my house using the handrail to take three steps. Two days later, the walker and cane were put in storage because I didn’t need them. Tylenol was used for pain relief for the week following surgery just so I could sleep better. One week after surgery I drove to the grocery store and did several errands. Six weeks after surgery, I enjoyed an eleven day Panama Canal Cruise, walking to islands or from one end of the ship to the other on sea days. I ate lots of food but lost five pounds because I was so active.

Other positive results after surgery:
– My replaced hip feels like my original but pain free.
– I now sleep six or seven hours a night instead of three or four.
– People say I now look happy but before surgery I had a painful look.

Anterior Approach Hip Replacement January 2017:  I met with Dr. O’Neill in regard to hip pain. The pain was causing me to be unable to play tennis and I was trying to manage pain during everyday activities such as going up/down stair, getting out of the car, etc. Once we determined the pain was starting to interfere with my lifestyle at the age of 52, Dr. O’Neill recommended hip replacement surgery. NO REGRETS!! Since no muscle is torn in this procedure, my recovery time was excellent. I stayed over one night in a rehab center, went home, was on pain medication for several days and then was able to manage pain with Tylenol and Advil. I did not require a walker for more than one day, was able to use a cane 2 days after surgery, go upstairs, and get in/out of a car. My pain prior to surgery was GONE! Amazingly, 7 short weeks after surgery I was back playing tennis. My coach and team could not believe the difference in my mobility. After watching me limp around and hop on one foot for over a year, I was back to playing tennis with no limitations! Dr. O’Neill and his staff at TCO were a pleasure to work with. I felt well prepared on what to expect going into surgery and was simply amazed and pleased with my recovery time post-surgery. I have talked to other hip replacement patients and realize how fortunate I was to find Dr. O’Neill and the staff at TCO. To have someone perform the surgery on my hip with as much experience and expertise as Dr. O’Neill was truly a blessing. The care I was given before, during, and after surgery has been truly exceptional. I will be forever grateful to Dr. O’Neill, his staff and TCO. Should I need any type of orthopedic assistance in the future, rest assured I will go to TCO!

After many years of living with pain in my left hip that increasingly limited my activities, I decided to have my hip replaced at age 56. I was referred to Dr. O’Neill by an acquaintance and after meeting him for the first time, I was sure that I wanted him to be my surgeon. He was professional, good-humored and took the time to make sure all of my questions were answered. I entered the EXCEL program and the surgery was done in their Edina office with overnight recovery across the street. I was discharged the following day with only a cane. I stopped needing pain medication after a few days and within two weeks no longer used the cane. Recovery was quick and I have no pain or limitations. My only regret is that I didn’t have it done years earlier.

I have very HIGH regards and review of Dr. O’Neill, Jessie Donovan and team. Each of them have given/shown me their desire to make life easier for me. Dr. O’Neill is always performing the latest procedures. To have such horrible pain and not able to complete even small tasks, it’s been a treasure to have relief. Dr. O’Neill has performed four major surgeries for me and all have been very successful. Two hips replacements and the latest are two knee surgeries. The recovery from the latest knee surgery this fall has been extremely easy and quick to once again get back to living. Life is so much better. I have suggested Dr. O’Neill to several others who have surgical needs and reports that I hear from them are equally pleased.

I am so thankful to have listened to advice to see Dr. Owen O’Neill.  It was all an extremely positive experience. He took time to thoroughly explain everything. I trusted him immediately and had an anterior hip replacement in which I was pain free after surgery. I did not need anything stronger than Tylenol and only a few days with that. I still can’t believe how easy it was. I want to do way too much because the pain is gone!! I am back to walking and cleaning my house and looking forward to cross-country skiing this winter. Jessie was so kind, helpful and encouraging and I did better when I listened to her! Ann was always so helpful and friendly.  What wonderful care I had and I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and his team. Thank you with all my heart.

I am a 67 year old woman whose right hip was bone on bone. Dr. Owen O’Neill performed the minimal invasive anterior hip replacement surgery on me on November 9th and I am amazed at the result. I spent one night in the hospital, went home with the ability to do steps, used prescription pain medication for two days and then was able to control the pain with just Tylenol. Additionally, I only needed assistive devices for two days post-surgery. It is surprising that no PT is required since muscles are not cut. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and Jesse. It is a relief to be able to walk again without pain.

Fabulous! Was back at work the following week and on an airplane to the coast by myself within 3 weeks of the surgery. The EXCEL program was simply great. It allowed me to heal at my own pace. Dr. O’Neill said; “go ahead – your knee will make strange sounds but remember you can’t hurt the device”. That’s all I need to hear and I was off. There was no stopping me. This surgery was a non-event in my life – just the way it should be.

I had the anterior approach hip replacement on May 1st, 2017.  The reason I am writing this is because I was you at one point. I wasn’t sure which doctor to use. I wasn’t sure what I was going to experience. Most of all, I wanted to see what the outcome of others were. I am 52 years old and was worried I wouldn’t be able to play pickleball again. I went through the EXCEL program with Dr. Owen O’Neill.  I had surgery at the Crosstown Surgery Center. The surgery went well. A few hours later, I was moved across the street to an assisted living facility to spend one night to recover/rehab. I was up and walking just a few hours after surgery.

The entire staff at both places were very kind and put me at ease. I followed all of the exercises and stretching suggestions. Dr. O’Neill told me I would be back on the pickleball court 8 weeks after surgery. My goal was to play in the July 4th tournament. He was right!  I was playing slowly at 6 weeks and by July 4th, 2017 (8 weeks and 3 days) I was in the tournament and we won the gold!

I highly recommend Dr. Owen O’Neill, Jessie Donovan and the rest of the staff at Twin Cities Orthopedics!

My favorite way to exercise is walking around Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun. When it became too painful to do that, I knew I needed help. I had my first hip replacement in August 2013, at the age of 56, by Dr. Owen O’Neill. It was done in the hospital and involved a short hospital stay. My recovery went well and the results were fantastic. Within a month I was back to enjoying all the things people take for granted until they can no longer do them; like going for long walks and being pain free.

By the beginning of 2017 it became clear that I would need the other hip replaced. Dr. O’Neill explained a new program, started after my first procedure, called EXCEL. It involved having the surgery done at the same day surgery center with an overnight stay at an assisted living facility. I felt a little nervous about not recovering in the hospital.

The way things went, my worries were unfounded. I had my second hip replacement done in March 2017 . My experience with the EXCEL program was that the recovery was faster and easier than my first surgery. The accommodations for the overnight stay were top-notch. I had my own private room and one-on-one nursing care.I was walking the halls and having physical therapy within a few hours of having the surgery. My pain was well controlled, I got a comfortable nights’ sleep and was able to go home by noon the next day. Once home, I was surprised at how quickly and uneventful my recovery was. 4 weeks after my procedure my husband and I went to Minnehaha Falls. I was able to walk down and back up 110 steps without difficulty!

I would highly recommend the EXCEL program and Dr. Owen O’Neill. I feel I’ve been given a second chance to enjoy my life, and am very grateful to TCO for all they have done for me.

I met Dr. O’Neill for the first time in 2014 when my right hip needed surgery. I have always been active as a mother of 6 kids, full-time RN and part-time aerobic fitness instructor. Never imagined the first time surgery was completed and 100% successful that I would in two years time also need the left hip repaired as well. I went back to Dr. O’Neill the second time because of the trust, professionalism and care I knew I would receive. His entire surgical staff does an amazing job; both recoveries have been nothing short of and all of everything I expected in the recovery, post-op healing process. I was back to work in about a weeks time at my nursing job and back to teaching my fitness classes in 8 weeks following surgery. I can sleep again at night and not wake up in pain. Now, I am back to enjoying life with my kids, grandkids, other family members, friends and neighbors. Thank you Dr. O’Neill and your entire surgical team!

Dr. O’Neill performed an anterior total hip replacement on me in March, and less than 3 months later I am playing volleyball and completely functioning with no pain! SO happy I had it done!! Dr. O’Neill’s professional and caring demeanor really put me at ease. He answered all of my questions, and everything went just as I had expected (no surprises). I am very thankful for my friend’s recommendation to see Dr. O’Neill. I have now also recommended him to another friend! …and so on, and so on…

Dr. Owen O’Neill did my knee replacement surgery and i couldn’t be more pleased. I didn’t want to have it done, knew that I had to and imagined the worst I guess. Dr. O’Neill was very informative, along with his staff. The surgery went great, in the hospital for 2 days able to walk without a great deal of discomfort. Therapy went great was done after 6 appointments. My range of mobility is right on. I couldn’t be more pleased.

I am 70 and that surgery was 10 weeks ago. I would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill to all. For the first time in over a year I can sleep at night without pain.

I was shocked and dismayed to need a hip replacement in my 50’s. When researching surgeons – two separate parties referred me to Dr. O’Neill. When I met him at the pre-op appointment – he communicated directly and clearly. I never felt rushed with my many questions and I was impressed with his confidence in the procedure and in his ability to restore my mobility. That confident style reassured me that I could get back an active life.

The surgery and recovery went exactly as planned (no issues or concerns). His visits to me in the hospital post surgery were timely, informative and caring. At the post op appointments, Dr. O’Neill was thorough in his explanation of x-rays, expected progress and restrictions (I healed quickly – the restrictions were few). My entire experience with Dr.O’Neill and TCO was great. I truly felt I was treated by a surgeon who was interested not just in the mechanics of the surgery – but took pleasure in seeing my improved health and well-being. Thanks Dr. O’Neill. I’ll report back on my horseback riding adventures in a year!

I have had very successful luck with Dr. O’Neill, I had a hip replaced 2 years ago with no problem and was very pleased with everything. This past January I had my knee replaced, I was in the hospital for 4 days, the care team at the hospital were very pleased with my fast recovery, I had no problems. My physical therapy went very well; I was able to bend the joint easily. The staff remarked that they were surprised with how fast I was moving along, and I said it was because I had a fabulous surgeon. At 6 weeks they kicked me out of PT because I was doing so well. Dr. Owen O’Neill was responsible for my rapid recovery. If I would not have had a good surgeon, I would not have had a good outcome. I have no doubt that he is one of the best in the twin cities. I have had no complications. Dr. O’Neill called me his poster girl because I was recovering so fast.

Around 7 months or so, I had both of my knees replaced by Dr. Owen O’Neill. My second knee was much easier for me as I knew what to expect. I was hesitant at first but you have to overcome your fear. While in the hospital, I did exactly what Dr. O’Neill and his team recommended, I didn’t let the pain control me and I did the Physical Therapy.

My goal throughout was to be able to climb the 88 steps from my dock to my lake house. I will find out if I can meet this objective in May, but have no doubt in my mind that I will.

Dr. O’Neill was very open about the entire experience, he was straightforward and made sure I knew exactly what to expect. I would recommend him to anyone.

My left anterior hip replacement has been a life enhancing experience. Dr. O’Neill completed my hip replacement in early February of 2017. The procedure gave me minimal discomfort for a couple of days after the procedure. Overall, I’ve had dental issues that have given me more discomfort than this hip replacement. I was back walking 2 miles per day two weeks after the procedure. After a month, I was back to walking my daily 3 to 4 miles per day and feeling great. I walked my first 18 holes of golf two months after the procedure with no discomfort. The stability of my new hip is amazing. 3 months post surgery, my new hip feels as good as my original equipment right hip. Dr. O’Neill and his staff did an excellent job of caring for me before, during and post surgery. What a great group of people. I highly recommend their services.

2 years ago, I had my right hip replaced at 36 y/o.  This week, I had my left hip replaced. Both by Dr. Owen O’Neill.  I have re-read my past testimonial and I wouldn’t change a thing. From start to finish, you are good hands. Well cared for, educated and continually reminded that every single person involved in the process from pre-op to post-op are looking out for your best interest.  I now have a pair of Nike Dri-Fit shirts with TCO embroidered on them. I wear them because they are great quality, sure, but I also wear them every week because they remind me how much pain I carried with me daily and how much higher my quality of life is to be able to run around with my two kids as they grow day by day.  If I had a TCO branded outfit for everyday of the week, I’d wear it with pride. I can’t possibly thank Dr. O’Neill or the EXCEL team enough. You have truly changed my life.

I had knee replacement surgery and had only visited Dr. O’Neill once before the surgery. He told me I had a torn meniscus but also a lot of arthritis so I would need a knee replacement. He was very professional, courteous, and kind. He did a great job and the scar is minimal. I highly recommend him.

I had a very successful total left hip replacement in November 2011. The surgeon used the posterior approach procedure.

In May 2016 Dr. O’Neill performed an equally successful total hip replacement on my right side using the anterior approach procedure.

There are significant differences in the recovery process between these two approaches.

In the posterior method I used a walker/cane about 2 1/2 weeks and the discomfort was greater. I was back walking 18 holes of golf in about six weeks.

After the anterior procedure used by Dr. O’Neill, I started walking unaided (no cane) on day 2 after surgery. On day 7, post-surgery, I started putting and chipping at the golf course. On day 12, I was walking 3 miles most days at 90% of full stride. By week 3, I was walking 4-6 miles most days at 100%.

My wife and I are going hiking in the Italian Alps in August 2016.

WOW! What can I say about Dr. Owen O’Neill and his staff? I’m a super active mid 60’s guy who was playing a pretty high level of competitive racquetball 2 to 3 times per week until the last couple of years. My hip pain got to the point where I could not play at all, much less competitively. I was waking up 10 to 20 times per night from pain with obviously significant sleep interruption. Walking from the house to my truck in the driveway was very difficult.

First of all, my hip pain disappeared completely. What a magnificent relief. Secondly Dr. O’Neill and his staff made me feel listened to, empathized with and cared for. I managed to strain my inner thigh muscle 3 days after surgery, so that set my recovery back a bit, but here I am 3 months out and super pleased with the results. My left hip also needs replacement and at my 3 week checkup, in spite of the strained muscle issue, I told Dr. O’Neill that I couldn’t wait to get the left hip done. I’m scheduled for that in October 2016 and I expect to be back at racquetball by January or February 2017. Without hesitation I recommend Dr. O’Neill and his staff. On a scale of 1-10 they get a 15.

Words can’t express the severe pain that my bone-on-bone hip caused me.  My total hip replacement procedure went extremely well and I was fortunate to not have a single pain in my hip after surgery.  I went home the next day.  What a relief it is to once again be able to put on and tie my shoes, get into low cupboards, and do all the other things requiring a good hip.  I would refer Dr. O’Neill to anyone suffering from hip problems.  He and his assistant, Jessie, provided me with the best care and support one could hope for.

After five years of degenerative hip issues, I had my right hip replaced by Dr. O’Neill through TCO’s EXCEL Program. Three days after surgery I was walking without discomfort or use of a walker. Two weeks post surgery I was back on my bike riding without pain or restrictions. I am looking forward to having my left hip replaced by Dr. O’Neill within the next 12-24 months. TCO and Dr. O’Neill provided an exceptional patient experience for me.

After putting up with annoying hip pain for a number of years (with the help of three cortisone injections) I finally did the right thing. I witnessed two good friends make remarkable recoveries after having Direct Anterior Hip replacements performed by Dr. Owen O’Neill. With their encouragement and glowing recommendation of Dr. O’Neill, I had an initial visit in early December, 2015. I am no spring chicken (62) but am physically active. I shared my hope to get through March (ski season) have my hip replaced in early April and be on the golf course by the first of June. Dr. O’Neill’s response: “Good plan-we can do that” so, with one final cortisone shot, I was off to ski in Big Sky, Montana! Unfortunately, I decided to play hockey on a couple of weekends in February which prevented me from ANY activity in March. The date of my surgery couldn’t come soon enough. April 6, 2016- NEW HIP! One night in the hospital, walking with no assistance on day 3, no pain medication by day 7. First round of golf six weeks after surgery, back to walking over thirty miles each week. I look forward to next ski season. Thank you Dr. O’Neill, Jessica, and Alyssa for your care and medical gifts. Truly unbelievable!

I cannot thank Dr. O’Neill and his staff enough for giving me my life back. I had become very immobile before having my hip replacement. I had total hip replacement and also had to lengthen that leg 2 inches. I had the surgery on a Tuesday and went home on Wednesday. I was at the grocery store walking with the grocery cart on Friday. I had very little pain. No need for therapy other than what they showed me at the hospital after surgery. It has been awesome! Can’t thank you enough Dr. O’Neill, Jessica and Alyssa. You all are just the BEST.

Diane K.

After cortisone shots for pain in her right hip, Diane found that daily activities continued to be restrained by worsening pain. Dr. O’Neill described to her the new anterior approach he had been studying and implementing for hip replacements and he recommended this approach to Diane.
With the right equipment, Dr. Owen O’Neill performed Diane’s hip replacement and the outcome was fantastic! Diane states, “I was in the hospital for two days and went home with no restrictions. There was much less pain than the previous surgery on my other hip. My scar is five inches long– half as long as the other one.”
As soon as she came home from the hospital, Diane could get in and out of bed without assistance. In ten days, she no longer needed a walker or cane. She faithfully did physical therapy exercises, all at home!

From start to finish, Dr. O’ Neill and the entire staff at Twin Cities Orthopedics were great. He totally explained everything to me before, during and after my hip replacement. From bone to bone and now, no hip pain!

I am deeply appreciative for his knowledge and know how, and for the excellent care I received. I would recommend Dr. Owen O’Neill and TCO to anyone.

I had my surgery on Dec. 8th, 2015, and I write this two months later. I am 48, and have always been very active and in pretty good shape. I’m amazed at how quickly I recovered, and how smooth the process was, from start to post op. Dr. O’Neill has been great and his entire team (Marni, Jessie and my awesome nurse, Ashley, to name a few) were fantastic. I used a walker for two days, graduated to a cane, and in four days was walking with no assistance. I started light exercise in three weeks and now am doing all the physical activity I was doing before my hip started bothering me. Every day gets a little better. I would recommend this procedure and Dr. O’Neill and his team to anyone.

The surgical team was phenomenal and everyone left me feeling confident and well cared for. I especially appreciated that my best friend was able to be with me up until it was time to roll into the operating room. It was such a big help in reducing that intensely anxious pre-operating feeling!

After surgery I was able to recover at the EXCEL center instead of the hospital. I absolutely recommend that to anyone who is able to qualify. I couldn’t get over the superb care and quiet, peaceful environment. Thank you Justina and company! You are all fantastic!

And it meant a lot to me that Dr. O’Neill came to see me that eve (surgery day) and walked with me a bit. It is such a great feeling that my doctor is as excited about these results as his patients are. And yes, I was up walking with my walker in just hours after my surgery. I went from walker to a cane within a few days, and within a week and a half, I no longer needed the cane. By one month post-op I was walking 3-4 miles each day and back to work. Throughout the rest of the summer and fall I averaged 35-40 miles a week walking with no pain.

Not exaggerating even a little, Dr. O’Neill and his great staff have given me back the ability to enjoy my family, friends and work. There is no way to express what it means to me to be able to move, sleep and have more energy for anything I want to do without constant exhausting pain. And such a gift to have my life back so swiftly with no need for extensive physical therapy, no extensive scarring from muscles being cut and so much less pain than I imagine a traditional approach would have generated.

Heartfelt thanks to all of you! You are the best!

Dr. Owen O’Neill has replaced both of my hips. The first was done October 16, 2007 and the second was done recently on November 13, 2015. In 2007 he explained to me that the surgery would be as minimally invasive as possible but it was done using the then traditional approach (either lateral, from the side, or posterior, from the back). Actually the first was somewhat a combination of the two; I’ve described that left hip replacement as having the incision in a southwesterly location. I was told of the physical limitations and pain I would experience until I was fully recovered. I used crutches, did all of the physical therapy exercises and managed the pain with medication. There were no surprises and I was very satisfied with the results

The recent 2015 replacement was done using the direct anterior approach. Before the surgery Dr. O’Neill explained that this different approach should minimize the pain (and the necessary medication), speed healing and generally provide a quicker recovery. Of course I somewhat seriously asked why we didn’t do it that way the first time. It is now about 2-1/2 months after the second surgery and I’ve jokingly told Dr. O’Neill that hip replacement has become similar to getting fast food; drive up to the first window, insurance makes the payment, drive to the second window, get a new hip and go home.

I don’t recall exactly how long I used crutches in 2007, how much pain medication I took or how long it was until I was able to resume all physical activities without any limitations. I do recall enough to know the difference in the overall recovery from the two surgeries was remarkable. In 2015 I used the crutches for less than a week, I did not use all of only one prescription for pain medication, I was carefully riding the stationary bike in less than two weeks in addition to doing the physical therapy exercises and I was walking normally with no pain in about a month. At about a month post-surgery I was able to increase my workouts to about an hour and one-half nearly every day (bike, weights and exercises). I will resume outdoor biking up to 30 miles a day when Minnesota weather permits. My recovery from the most recent surgery was so much quicker and involved much less pain. I don’t believe any surgeon could have done a better job and it’s a big plus when your doctor is also a very nice fellow.

My experience with Twin Cities Orthopedics and the EXCEL program was great from start to finish. We only had one hiccup during my time at TCO. There was a thunderstorm on the day of my surgery and the air conditioning went out at the surgery center. Dr. Owen O’Neill explained the safety issues and the team handled the situation very professionally. Due to the safety matters, we decided to move my surgery to the next day. This demonstrated how important it is to focus on the safety of the patient and showed how efficiently a situation can be managed. It was out of the control of the surgical team, yet managed very well.

The entire team from office visits, to surgery, to overnight recovery, to post-surgical visits was very professional and enjoyable.

I know Dr. Owen O’Neill has seen three new patients at my referral since my surgery in May. I will continue to refer patients to Dr. Owen O’Neill and the EXCEL program.

Thank you!

Leah Zimmerman walked me through this whole procedure which made it so much easier.  I knew I could always reach her when contacting Dr. Owen O’Neill, or even Alyssa, was a bit more challenging. Often she could answer my ‘paranoid’ concerns without having to bother Dr. Owen O’Neill.

This program is one of the best programs TCO initiated, and I am blessed to be a recipient.

And as importantly, participating in TCO’s own physical therapy program was another blessing.  As I have mentioned Karen Edmonson… well I can’t say enough about her.  She is a treasure indeed.  I continue to get increased ‘bend’ and it is because of the exercises, ‘tricks of the trade’, etc. that she has taught me….all while keeping in mind a pulled muscle, arthritis in my lower back, and at one point hip tendonitis.  Fourteen years ago I was not so blessed to have TCO physical therapy, and it has made a world of difference.   (Can already bend my ‘new’ knee farther than I can my 14-yr. old knee.)

I am doing things now I NEVER could do before my surgery.  In addition, my chiropractor is amazed at how straight I am. He has never seen my pelvis straight as long as I have been going to him, which is 5-10 years.   Of course Dr. Owen O’Neill is my hero; and Dr. Jesse, too, has been wonderful.

Thanks thanks thanks to the entire TCO staff.  I am blessed indeed.

Thank you!

I had a minimally invasive right anterior hip replacement on 10/16/2015 by Dr. O’Neill. It is truly a miracle for which I am very grateful. For the first time in over 18 months, I am walking without pain. I have a range of motion that amazes me.

I had polio as a 9 year old and had 3 surgeries on both legs and feet and now have worn bilateral leg braces for 16 years because I have post-polio syndrome. I was fearful of more surgery and I think even the EXCEL staff was leery of my disabilities but I can safely say that I have made it through the surgery in excellent shape. The first time I stood up in the recovery room I knew the pain was gone!

I highly recommend this surgery to anyone who needs a new hip! I also highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and all the staff at TCO including Eileen, Alyssa & Jessie. The EXCEL nurses and PTs were also terrific. All of my appointments were timely and the front desk staff are wonderful. Dr. O’Neill is very kind and thorough and humorous and I am so thankful for him. I am a RN and have been for 40 years and we nurses are very discerning and sometimes we aren’t the best patients, but this was a truly remarkable experience for me and my husband.

From the moment I met with Dr. O’Neill I felt at ease and comfortable with the decision to go ahead with my hip replacement. I was bone on bone and in pain. They scheduled me pretty quickly. I had it done at Southdale Fairview and everyone was wonderful. They took such great care of me and Dr. O’Neill and his assistant, Jessie Donovan, are true professionals with a great bedside manner. All my follow up appointments assured me I was on track to my recovery. I would highly recomend Dr. O’Neill to any of my friends or family. Thank you so much for taking such great care of me. My hip is perfect!

I have been going to the BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area) since 1964 when my father took me on my first trip to this magical, wonderful place. Since then I have made 25-30 trips back to the BWCA, recently with my sons and nephews. To say that it has a special place in my heart is a gross understatement. 2 years ago I came off the last portage in near tears, suffering from arthritic pain. Since then, Dr. Owen O’Neill, Dr. Ed Kelly and their expert staffs have replaced 2 shoulders, 2 hips and 1 knee. The attached photo was taken earlier this year and shows me and my team ( including my youngest son and nephew ) over looking “our unnamed lake” in the BWCA. We traveled over 10 miles to get there, crossing 3 lakes, 4 portages and 3 rivers. My sincere thanks to Dr. Kelly, Dr. O’Neill and their expert staffs for giving me this important piece of my life back! I strongly recommend them both and encourage you to schedule a visit if you are in pain like I was!

Dr. O’Neill performed a Total Hip replacement, Anterior approach on February 23, 2015.
This was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Prior to the surgery I struggled to walk a block or two and now I am back to 100% with no restrictions.
The recovery time was minimal, the patient care was outstanding from start to finish with follow up calls and appointments with Jessie and Dr. O’Neill.
When I explain the process and the ease of recovery with this surgery people are amazed, especially with the flexibility to cross my legs and really no restrictions, it’s as if it’s better than new.
I would recommend this procedure and team of Dr’s to anyone who is looking to get their quality of life back, I’m sure glad I did.
Thank You!!

I had my left hip replaced in 2000 with the posterior type surgery. I had difficulty walking (with a very noticeable limp which caused a lot of back pain even after many weeks of therapy.) When my right hip became painful, I was afraid to go through such misery again even though I couldn’t walk more than a few minutes without sitting down. I heard of the less invasive anterior hip approach by accident and was very leery of it until I met Dr. O’Neill. His attitude gave me such confidence that he could correct my limp. I am so thankful that I met him. My surgery was on July 2, 2015 and I came home on July 4th. There wasn’t any need for even a cane after the second week. Now there is absolutely no back pain or limp for the first time in many years. None of my acquaintances could believe that I even had the surgery when they saw me after the second week. It is truly a miracle for me and there aren’t enough words to describe my admiration for Dr. O’Neill and the capabilities for him and his staff.

When I came to the realization that I needed a hip replacement, I started reading reviews like this one, I questioned if it really was as successful with the minimal discomfort that people stated?

This surgery was one of the best decisions of my life and to say I would strongly I recommend Dr. O’Neill to anyone who is considering this procedure would be an understatement..
Monday morning I had my surgery and was home Tuesday by noon, by Thursday I was walking with a cane and on my own by Saturday.
One of my biggest concerns was missing work, I missed a total of 7 days now grant it, I am at a desk most of the day but my coworkers were amazed at the progress!
The most amazing thing to me was how quickly and steady the healing process was, I just went back for my 10 week checkup and I have no restrictions in fact I don’t even think about my hip anymore.

Thank you for giving me my mobility back again and I am looking forward to the summer activities that I have been missing, you folks are the best!

I had direct anterior hip replacement done on my right hip April 23, 2015. The next morning I was walking with no aid (crutch/cane)- I couldn’t believe it!

I spent only one night in the hospital. Two days later, I was walking the dog. I played golf (chipping/putting) 8 days after surgery.

I had my left hip replaced in 2006 by another TCO surgeon. I spent 4 nights in the hospital. Two weeks on crutches, then needed a cane.

The anterior hip replacement is the only way to have a hip replaced! Minimally invasive, little pain and recovery time is little to none.

Dr. O’Neill has a lot of experience in the anterior hip replacement procedure. He answered all my questions-and then some. I am recommending this surgery to all who need it. One person who saw me two weeks after surgery is already in the process of scheduling anterior hip replacement surgery with Dr. O’Neill.

I am extremely grateful to Dr. O’Neill, Jessie and his staff. I had struggled with constant hip pain for almost a year. I finally realized it was more than an overworked muscle and went to see Dr. O’Neill (he was suggested by a friend who is in the medical world). I was diagnosed with Arthritis in my left hip. Dr. O’Neill suggested direct anterior hip replacement. He explained the surgery and the benefits that went along with this procedure. He and his staff worked to schedule me in for surgery as soon as possible.

The surgery was performed at St. Francis Hospital on March 30, 2015. All the staff at St. Francis was wonderful. I was back in my room by 2 p.m. I felt wonderful! I was up and standing without a walker or crutches by 6 p.m. I was walking the hallways of St. Francis the next morning; I was also able to do steps without any assistance. I had absolutely no pain, it was amazing. I was fortunate; I never had to take any pain medication after the surgery.

I left St. Francis the day after surgery. I was back to work in 2 weeks. My life is back to my normal, which is busy. I have 3 adorable grandchildren from 5 months to 2 years that I can carry, crawl and run with. I am back to being able to walk, exercise, garden, shop without having to take Advil, Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

Thank you so much Dr. O’Neill, Jessie and all the staff I am able to move freely without pain!

After talking with 2 other Dr’s, I met Dr. Owen O’Neill and instantly felt I had the right fit for me. Now just under a month after a hip replacement, I cannot recommend Dr. O’Neill and his staff enough. My wife said it best when we went to the pre-op class “You couldn’t possibly be in better hands”. As a 36 year old who wants to get the most mileage out of this I needed to find someone I was comfortable with and trusted to do what was best for me. I amazed day by day at the progress. Bottom line: If you are looking for someone that is truly passionate about helping people from the first conversation to the post surgery recovery, I honestly don’t believe you can find a better person to work with. Sit down and talk with him and see for yourself.

I had the new direct anterior hip replacement surgery on May 6,2014, home the next day. I didn’t even bother with a walker, and after 2 weeks I gave up the cane. It was an incredibly easy experience, and if it gets any easier it could be drive through surgery. I will definitely recommend Dr. O’Neill to some friends who are contemplating hip surgery. The entire staff is top notch, and I was kept completely informed on what to expect throughout the entire process.

I met Dr. O’Neill in 2008 when I was having such a difficult time with my knees. The lack of mobility and the pain made simple daily activities impossible. A total ‘knee replacement’ returned me to an active lifestyle. In 2010 I had ‘rotator cuff repair’, and in April of 2014 I had a ‘direct anterior hip replacement.’ The surgical skills of Dr. O’Neill and the aftercare of his team were outstanding. I can be more active now than I was 10 years ago. I would highly recommend him as an orthopedic surgeon.

I had total left knee replacement by Dr. O’Neill and his team on April 7, 2014. I just want to say how great Dr. O’Neill and his team were before and after surgery. I would highly recommend Dr. O’Neill and his team to anybody who needs orthopedic surgery.

I am a business consultant for a computer software company and have the pleasure of traveling 40-45 weeks out of the year. The last 5 years, prior to my anterior hip replacement in December 2013, was extremely difficult; to the point that I had to have wheelchair assistance when I was at the airport. I could no longer walk to my gate to catch my plane. I could no longer bend over to tie my shoe laces. I had to walk with a cane and could only walk short distances because of the pain. I knew I had to do something to improve my quality of life.

Then in April of 2013, I received an announcement letter from Dr. O’Neill‘s office about the new minimal invasive anterior hip replacement surgery. I had never heard of this type of surgery even though I had been an Orthopedic and Operating Nurse for 8 years and my wife a nurse for 30 years. I knew I had to attend this presentation. After the presentation, I immediately setup an appointment to see Dr. O’Neill. He told me that I had severe osteoarthritis in both my hips and knees, but the right hip joint was the worse. My only concern was whether or not he would be willing to operate on a person of size. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am 6 feet tall and weigh over 300 lbs. He told me it would be difficult but he was not going to turn me away and tell me to lose weight first.

We scheduled the surgery for the middle of December because I could use my vacation time, but I had to be back to work the first week of January to start traveling again for work. All the information I received was exceptional, not only from his office but also from the hospital I was to have my surgery.

Now, everyone as heard that nurses make the worse patients, and I was not the exception. I had had two previous major surgeries in 2013 and couldn’t wait to get out of those hospitals. They were not very pleasant stays. For my hip surgery, Dr. O’Neill suggested, St Francis Hospital in Shakopee, MN and I am glad I took his suggestion. My stay in the hospital was longer than normal, 3 days. The hospital was outstanding, great facility and hospital rooms (all private), wonderful people; from admissions, pre-op nurses and anesthetists to the physical therapists and occupational therapist, but it was the floor nurses and nursing assistants that really restored my faith in the nursing profession. They were outstanding!!! I am know where I will be for my next hip surgery in December of 2014.

The surgery went well, I was up walking with a walker the next day and a cane the day after. My wife and oldest daughter couldn’t believe their eyes. They hadn’t seen me walk that quickly and without pain for years. I was back traveling for work 3 weeks after surgery. I also got the same response from the people at work.

Yes, my quality of life has improved greatly and is getting better with each passing week.

Thanks, Dr. O’Neill, Jessie, Alyssa and the people at St. Francis Hospital.

I had been fortunate my whole life with great energy and great health. For 77 years I had worked hard, played hard, and enjoyed life. In 2013 it all changed very quickly. One Sunday, I sat down and could not stand up. My knee would not support me. I just felt terrible pain, pain, pain.

My primary care physician told me that an orthopedic specialist was needed and sent me to Twin Cities Orthopedics. I had no appointment and I was desperate. They said no doctor was available. After pleading my case, Dr. O’Neill had mercy and took me as an add-on patient. My x-rays showed bone on bone. I had a cortisone shot but the relief was short lived. I needed surgery.

Dr. O’Neill performed my first surgery in August. Fabulous! I was back at work in 3 weeks! But now the left knee seemed worse than ever. This time I could hardly wait to get the surgery done. Again, everything went great. I went home from rehab in 10 days, on Dec 23rd. On the way home I got groceries and cooked Christmas dinner for my family.

Today, one year later, my knees are great and again I will cook Christmas dinner for my family, very grateful for my new knees which give me truly a new life. A huge thank you to Dr. O’Neill and his great staff. I would highly recommend him to anyone needing this surgery.

Below is a letter from James, who traveled from Canada to have a hip replacement with Dr. Owen O’Neill through the EXCEL Program at Twin Cities Orthopedics.

It’s funny how life works; how small the world seems to be, and how sometimes things just happen to go just right. This is where my story begins. After several months of enduring hip pain, it became apparent that it was time for a total hip replacement (THR). One of the keys for me, and what I think was important at my age (72), was the length of recovery after the surgery. I am an avid golfer both in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and in Marco Island, Florida; an outdoor cottage guy during the Canadian summers; and a guy that you could say just can’t sit still for five minutes. I was introduced to Dr. Owen O’Neill and Twin Cities Orthopedics from a close friend here in Toronto. After a short conversation with Dr. O’Neill and a brief discussion over an X-ray I had sent him, I knew this was the perfect fit for me. The THR being performed at Excel would have me back to my life of mobility in a third of the time of other THR procedures up here in Toronto. From the moment I arrived in Minneapolis, it was evident that the Excel team provides patients with coordinated care as advertised. I experienced outstanding care from all administration, all the dedicated nurses, and especially from Dr. Owen O’Neill himself. All questions about the surgery – and more importantly for me, about my recovery – were answered. After the surgery, the first thing I uttered to my son and daughter was, “What time is my tee time?” I just felt great – recovering for a few days in the private orthopedic suite getting nothing but the best care from all the excellent nurses on staff. I can’t thank them enough for making me feel so comfortable after the surgery. After a few more days recovering in a hotel suite provided by Excel and another examination/X-ray with Dr. O’Neill, I was on my way back home to Toronto. I had my surgery on a Monday morning and I was on a plane back to Toronto on Friday afternoon, and that is all due to the expertise of Dr. O’Neill and his team. Now, a few weeks after the surgery, family and friends can’t believe how quickly I’m recovering after having had a total hip replacement. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to my follow-up X-ray in about three weeks and a discussion via phone with Dr. O’Neill to discuss when I can make it back to the first tee to shave a few strokes off the scorecard. Most sincerely, James M.- Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I am 76 years old and had an anterior right hip replacement done by Dr. O’Neill. I had had a previous hip replacement done on the left side by another doctor using the posterior approach in 2009. Though the outcomes for both surgeries were positive, the recovery period for the anterior approach was considerably less painful and much shorter.

After the posterior surgery, I had to use a walker for a period of three to four weeks and a cane for several weeks beyond that. After a period of three months, I was still noticeably limping on that leg. With that recovery experience, I was not looking forward to repeating that procedure again when my right hip began to fail in 2013. To my good fortune, a friend at my church told me about her recent hip replacement which had been performed by Dr. O’Neill. She said that he had used an anterior approach which required a 5 inch incision in contrast to the eight or nine inch incision required in the posterior approach. She said her total recovery time was less than three weeks.

That sounded really positive to me, so I made an appointment to see Dr. O’Neill. When I met with Dr. O’Neill, I was immediately impressed with his very positive attitude. He thoroughly explained the anterior approach and showed me photos of previous patients who had the anterior surgery. I was amazed to see those patients walking only with a cane several days after their surgeries. In addition to Dr. O’Neill’s positive attitude, I was impressed with his personality and patient relations. He was not the typical “surgical god” that some surgeons pretend to be. He was a real person.

Because I really liked Dr. O’Neill and his approach, I had my right hip replaced by him. After staying in the hospital for two days, I returned home to begin my recovery. To my amazement, after less than a week, I was walking using only a cane for support. Because I wanted to impress Dr. O’Neill when I went to see him for a nine day check-up, I walked into the exam room using no cane or walker. Since his staff was very impressed with my progress, they took some videos of me walking in the hall. I really had no pain and was walking with no limp.

In a short period of time after that, I was again able to play golf and to ice skate, two of my favorite activities which had been limited because of the hip pain. Though both of my replaced hips work well now, the process of getting to a functional level was totally different. If you are considering having a hip replacement, I would encourage you to consider the anterior approach. To my good fortune and to yours if you choose the anterior approach, no doctor is better qualified to perform the procedure than Dr. O’Neill.

I had a hip replacement on my right hip in June 2013 with the new direct anterior approach. I never expected things to be good so soon. Dr. O’Neill indicated that the healing time was short and that I would be up and about rather quickly, but the healing exceeded my expectations. By two weeks after the operation

I am walking comfortably, do not need any supports such as a walker or a cane, I can bend comfortably, and I get up and down, walk, get in an out of cars, etc. more comfortably than I have been able to do in years.

The operation, the post operation care, the attention of the staff and Dr. O’Neill’s superb work deserves the highest commendation. All the information I received before the procedure was right on point, I was kept clearly informed every step of the way. I wish I had realized how easy this would be because I would not have waited this long to get this surgery. I feel like a new person and am grateful that such work can be done so well. Highest commendations to Dr. O’Neill and his staff.

I have been a teacher and boy’s high school hockey coach for almost 50 years. I am 70 years old and still coaching in Albert Lea. This past year my right hip was becoming so painful that I did all my coaching from the bench and didn’t skate at all. I went to Florida for stem cell therapy in hope that would rectify my condition. Part of the therapy included having a PRP treatment 6-8 weeks after the initial stem cell transplant. Dr. O’Neill offered this treatment. We met and I had an x-ray and then a conference. He explained that it was bone-on-bone and there was no evidence of improvement. He did give me the treatment and I came back in 6 weeks. No improvement. I then had a cortisone shot and it had no effect. I knew I was at the end of the line and so I asked Dr. O’Neill if he would do an anterior total hip replacement. We went over the procedure and on June 3rd I had the operation at St. Francis Hospital in Shakopee, MN.

Wow! What a pain-free experience. I had no pain from day one, and didn’t take one pain pill after being released from the hospital. I walked without any assistance. I didn’t need a walker, crutches, or a cane!

The staff at St. Francis was terrific! In fact, the x-ray tech was one of my former hockey players and the anesthetist was a former student of mine. Everyone was very professional, but very friendly and extremely caring. I left the hospital the day after my surgery.

Since the surgery I have been back for a 2 week and a 6 week checkup at which time I met with Dr. O’Neill and his assistant, Jessie. I have made steady progress throughout my recovery period. Five weeks after my surgery I skated for the first time and it felt great to be back on the ice again. I am looking forward to the coming hockey season. I couldn’t have had a better team of professionals, but moreover, great people with such an interest in my well-being and recovery. Their great personalities actually made this an enjoyable experience. My wife and I are also very grateful to Rebecca who in the pre and post-operative periods answered all of our calls and was so very pleasant and helpful.

I definitely would suggest this treatment to others. The people in Albert Lea have been amazed at my progress. I have recommended and given Dr. O’Neill’s name to many interested and prospective hip surgery candidates. I can only say “Thank You!” to Dr. O’Neill and his staff for their great work and for taking such good care of me!

I had left hip replacement 2006 and right hip March 2013 by Dr. O’Neill. Both hips were bone on bone and I was taking too many drugs to keep playing tennis and other fun stuff. Both results provided a like new hip with no pain nor problems. Recovery at home after three nights and two nights in the hospital was very uneventful and was off all pain medications by week 3 1/2. Working with Dr. O’Neill and staff was always a positive experience and I have referred three people to him so far and will continue to do so. The minimally invasive hip replacement procedure hospital stay and recovery seemed less than I anticipated each time. I am cleared to play senior tennis doubles eight weeks after surgery and am very happy with the result.

I had a bad knee. It hurt, I was limited in what I could do, and I was frustrated with myself. I went to Dr. O’Neill to get his opinion, and after a thorough examination and a conservative approach to relieving the pain, he recommended a knee replacement. It was not his first option, which I appreciated.

The information he provided to me before I decided to proceed with the replacement was exceptional. The pre-surgery information was exceptional both at his clinic and at Fairview Southdale Hospital. The recovery wasn’t fun, but on the 20th day following surgery I was walking through Lindbergh Terminal to a plane to travel to Phoenix for meetings. Within 3 months I was in Mexico, going down a zip line and repelling down from a very tall tree.

A year after surgery I remain extremely pleased with the surgery, the outcome, and the ability to live a much more active life. Dr. O’Neill is good at what he does.

Sharelle P. (pictured on left) had a total knee replacement performed by Dr. O’Neill (pictured) as a part of the EXCEL program at Twin Cities Orthopedics. The program’s focus of providing an all-encompassing patient experience helped her make a rapid recovery from surgery. “I had confidence in my knee right away,” she said. “I haven’t really had any pain and am able to do things I haven’t done in years.”Excel, which debuted in June of 2012, provides patients with coordinated care from day one to full recovery with personalized service from their surgeon and a nurse practitioner. This includes an orthopedic recovery suite that offers specialized orthopedic care, with 24-hour RN care, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. “The environment was much more comfortable than the hospital,” said Sharelle. “I was there because I was recovering and not because I was sick.”As a part of that coordinated care patients attend Excel Camp, a class that prepares them for surgery and introduces them to the staff they will be in contact with before and after the procedure. “They explained every step of the process in great detail and answered every question I had,” said Sharelle. “I was very well prepared for what was to come.”In addition to preparing Sharelle for her surgery and recovery, the friendliness of the Excel staff helped put her at ease throughout the entire experience. “From the person who greeted me at 5:30 a.m. to the person that rolled me out to my car” the staff was outstanding, she said. Throughout her recovery in the private orthopedic suite, Sharelle said she “quickly received assistance when needed” and “saw my surgeon everyday that I was there.”

In October/November 1996, Dr. Owen O’Neill performed reconstructive surgery on my right knee for a completely torn ACL and partially torn Meniscus. Dr. O’Neill’s professionalism was second to none and the results of the surgery speak for themselves. In 2003 at the age of 37 I entered the profession of Law Enforcement. I passed all the physical demands of the academy, have served 4 years on a SWAT team to include hundreds of hours of physically demanding training and countless real life situations. I have passed multiple physical fitness tests in my 11 years of law enforcement and my knee has stayed strong through it all as well as injury free. I run 2+ miles a day 4-5 days a week and do strength training on my legs without any issues. Thank you, Dr. O’Neill.

I was having terrible hip pain when I first saw Dr. O’Neill. He diagnosed me with bone on bone osteoarthritis in my right hip and told me I needed a complete hip replacement surgery. I had the direct anterior surgery on May 14, 2012. I can’t believe how fast I recovered. I was back to square dancing five weeks after the surgery. I didn’t use my walker after two weeks, nor a cane after three weeks. There was no need for any physical therapy or exercises. Before surgery, I could no longer sit on the floor, square dance, go shopping for groceries, walk up or down the basement steps to do laundry. I am so thankful Dr. Foley from Fairview referred me to Dr. O’Neill. I didn’t know that this direct anterior surgery was even available. I was soooo fortunate to have found Dr. O’Neill and his assistant, Jessie. I have already referred at least two other people to them.

I would recommend Dr. O’Neill and his staff to everyone considering having a hip replacement. I also would definitely recommend the Direct Anterior Hip Replacement procedure! The hip pain is GONE!

I highly recommend Dr. Owen O’Neill at Twin Cities Orthopedics. Dr. O’Neill has a lot of experience in the new direct anterior hip replacement procedure. He gained my trust by taking the necessary time to honestly answer my questions. I had surgery in December. I went home after two nights in the hospital. I did not need to go to a nursing home transitional care unit nor did I need outpatient physical therapy. This was a huge cost and time savings. I quit using a walker and cane the second day I was home. I drove after ten days and I had my right hip replaced. I had no pain, just incision soreness and leg muscle stiffness. My leg muscles were weak due to avoiding walking for the past two years because of hip pain. I work in a transitional care unit in a nursing home and I see the people who had complications with hip replacement surgery. I put surgery off way too long. Today, I would not think twice if I need my left hip replaced. And – the surgeon will be Dr. O’Neill.

I would like to thank Dr. O’Neill and his team for the excellent job they did replacing my left hip.

Dr. O’Neill is a very good doctor; it’s hard for me to find the words to praise his work.

He’s my hero. He has very skilled hands. My standard of living improved dramatically after the operation. I have no pain, when I’m walking and I can walk a lot. I have even became a member of a fitness club.

I would definitely recommend Dr. O’Neill to others who need a similar operation. Even more so, if I would ever need another replacement I would absolutely go back to Doctor O’Neill.

Dr. Owen O’Neill and Jessie Donovan, P. A. were absolutely fabulous throughout the entire knee replacement process. They were very informative, thorough, and reassuring in preparing me for surgery. They answered every question and concern. I always felt listened to and cared for. The surgery was a complete success thanks to their careful preparation and skill during surgery. They were very patient and caring during recovery too. Every e-mail or phone call was answered within hours. After surgery I struggled with sleep issues and they actively helped me find solutions. I followed their instructions and was dedicated to my physical therapy. It’s been 6 months and I feel like a new woman. Thanks so much to both of you!

Dr. O’Neill and his team are simply the best-the very best. From Dr. O’Neill’s anterior technique to the whole team’s concerned care giving, you simply couldn’t find a better group. I was up walking right after surgery and went home just a few days after the operation, and now, after two months, I never feel a thing at my hip and find it hard to believe I even had the operation.

After 4-5 years of walking like a penguin, and with a significant limp, it was time to re-visit Dr. O’Neill and Jessie for a heart to heart serious discussion to remedy my problem. It was a simple explanation of the proposed replacement and the surgery itself. Scared? Oh yeah! I actually found out that my leg WAS NOT going to be cut in two. The surgery and hospital nurses at St. Francis were OUTSTANDING. I highly recommend them. Rehab was exactly what I was told it was going to be. Sometimes uncomfortable, but NOT UNBEARABLE. The physical therapists at Dr. O’Neill’s office were great! Sometimes tough, but not harsh. I worked with Kelly mostly who was outstanding! It is now 3 1/2 months since surgery. My knee truly hasn’t felt this good in close to 10 years. I’m looking forward to deer hunting next month, WITHOUT PAIN. THANK YOU DR. O’NEILL, JESSIE and the physical therapists, especially Kelly.

Dr. O’Neill‘s technical competence matched the patient contact time for an outstanding result. Dr. O’Neill and his staff took the needed time to answer my questions and meet my needs as a patient. I’m very pleased with the outcome.

Smooth! Effective! Humorous! (Whoops, watch the funny bone!) These guys were great. The most difficult after effect was the constipation related to surgery. We can easily live with that. Oops I forgot immediately responsive. The team was there when I needed them. It has not been quite a year and I am at the gym 110 minutes per day as well as walking 3.5 miles per night. Now this is not only on the new hip but also the knee replacement of 2007. Hey carpe diem all.

*Joe had Anterior Approach Hip Replacement with Dr. Owen O’Neill.

March 16, 2012

Gail M.

Less than a month ago, Dr. O’Neill performed a anterior approach total hip replacement on my left hip, and a year ago he performed the same procedure on my right. Both surgeries went extremely well. While I recovered quickly after the first surgery, recovery was even faster for the second. I used a walker for a few days, a cane for about a week, and was walking easily in 10 days. In fact, I am walking more easily now than I have in years.

Since it was clear from the start I needed both hips replaced, we planned a course of action that would work best for me. I am grateful for the individualized care I received from Dr. O’Neill and his team. I have recommended him, and the anterior approach, to several others.
