Orthopaedic Consultants, a division of Twin Cities Orthopedics, has been serving the Twin Cities and surrounding areas for over 60 years. Our board certified/eligible orthopedic surgeons see patients at offices conveniently located around the metro area. We offer a complete range of treatment options for all orthopedic-related injuries or illnesses.
Orthopaedic Consultants was founded in 1940 by Dr. John Moe. Consistent with the healthcare climate at the time, the practice remained small and house calls were common. Orthopedic procedures were considered "major operations" requiring lengthy hospital stays and grueling recovery periods.
For many years Dr. Moe successfully practiced orthopedic medicine from his office in downtown Minneapolis. In 1950 Dr. Moe partnered with Dr. Lester Carlander and a year later, Dr. Harvey O'Phelan joined the group. The surgeons built Orthopaedic Consultants on three sound principles: provide patients with the highest quality medical care, treat them with respect, and dedicate their practice to orthopedic research.
With these guiding principles, Orthopaedic Consultants received a great deal of local recognition and began actively recruiting new physicians. In 1967 Orthopaedic Consultants opened a clinic at Southdale. In 1969 the organization, now 7 surgeons strong, incorporated.
The group continued to build a reputation of excellence locally and nationally over the next few years. During this time, Dr. Moe became internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in scoliosis treatment and Dr. O'Phelan was named Team Physician to the Minnesota Twins. These events helped establish Orthopaedic Consultants as Minnesota's premiere orthopedic group and catalyzed a period of growth and expansion for the organization.
Over the next few years, the science of orthopedics made great strides allowing for patient care to stretch beyond the hospital setting. Orthopaedic Consultants responded by opening clinics in Waconia (1979), Burnsville (1981), the Minneapolis Sports Medicine Center at Braemar (1985), the Minnesota Joint Replacement Center (1991), and in Elk River (1993). In July of 1993, Orthopedic Associates merged with Orthopaedic Consultants. The merger added 9 physicians and 2 clinic locations to the group and solidified our standing as one of the nation's largest orthopedic group practices.
Today, Orthopaedic Consultants is a group of 30+ orthopedic surgeons who practice out of several clinics conveniently located throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro and surrounding area. Surgical procedures are now frequently performed on an outpatient basis and advanced treatment options have dramatically decreased post-operative recovery times.
Although the healthcare climate and the science of orthopedics have changed over the past 60 years, our belief in our founding principles has not.
